Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Youngstown Andorra Juniper

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Plant Youngstown Andorra Juniper in full sun in USDA zones 3 through 9, with at least six hours of direct sun. It thrives in hot, dry, sunny locations and handles both summer heat and bitter cold. In shade it grows thin and open.
  2. Soil Preparation: It thrives in rocky or gravelly ground and other well-drained soils. Avoid low spots where water stands, and loosen the soil across the planting area.
  3. Planting: Dig each hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, and set plants level with the ground. It grows about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 8 feet wide. Space plants 4 to 5 feet apart for groundcover, or a little closer for faster slope coverage.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply right after planting to settle the soil. Spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch around and between plants, keeping it a few inches away from the stems, to hold moisture and keep weeds down while the plants fill in.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water regularly while it becomes established. Once settled, it is easy to maintain and handles dry conditions well. Water at the base of the plant, ideally in the morning, so the foliage stays dry, and check the soil a few inches down before watering again.
  2. Fertilizing: Junipers need little fertilizer. If growth is weak, apply a light slow-release fertilizer for evergreens in early spring. Rich soil and heavy feeding are not needed and can cause soft, floppy growth.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Watch for tip blight, which browns branch tips in wet springs, and prune out affected shoots in dry weather. Check for bagworms in early summer and spider mites during hot, dry spells, which cause dull, speckled foliage. Good air flow and dry foliage prevent most problems.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Little pruning is needed thanks to its tightly branched, low habit. Trim wayward stems back to a side shoot in spring. Avoid cutting into old, bare wood, since junipers rarely regrow from it.
  2. Winter Care: Bright green summer foliage turns rich bronze-purple and plum in winter, which is normal and returns to green in spring.
  3. Growing in Containers: It can grow in large outdoor containers or planters, even alongside boulders. Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining mix and water more often than in the ground.

Additional Tips for Growing Youngstown Andorra Juniper

  1. Walls and Walkways: Plant near the top of retaining walls and raised beds so branches cascade down, or along walkways for low evergreen texture.
  2. Slopes: Its dense branches cover bare soil and help hold it in place on slopes. It also thrives in rocky or gravelly ground where many plants have a hard time getting established, so it is ideal for tough banks.
  3. Deer and Shipping: It is deer resistant. Due to state plant regulations, it cannot ship to California. Deer usually pass over junipers for tastier plants, though very hungry deer may occasionally sample it during harsh winters.
