What is a growing zone?
The USDA divides the United States into zones based on the average coldest winter temperature. Each zone is 10°F apart, and each is split into "a" and "b" halves 5°F apart. A plant rated for zones 5–9 will survive the winter anywhere from zone 5 (about −20°F) up to zone 9 (about 20°F). Pick plants whose zone range includes yours.
Too cold for citrus or olive trees?
Lemons, limes, olives and other warm-climate trees grow well in large containers anywhere in the country. Keep them on the patio in summer and bring them into a bright room before the first frost.
