Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Arbequina Olive Tree Planting Instructions:

  1. Site Selection & Soil Preparation: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil, as Arbequina Olive trees thrive in full sun. They can tolerate poor soil but prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH (6-8). Avoid areas where water tends to pool, as these trees don't do well with soggy roots. Dig a hole slightly shallower than the root ball and twice as wide. Create a small mound at the center of the hole so that the tree’s root ball sits slightly above ground level. This helps prevent waterlogging when the soil settles. After placing the tree, backfill with a mix of native soil and compost for added nutrients.
  2. Spacing & Mulching: If planting multiple trees, space them about 12-15 feet apart to allow for proper air circulation and root growth. Once planted, add a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk to avoid rot. Mulch helps retain moisture and regulates soil temperature.
  3. Watering: Immediately after planting, water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. For the first few months, water deeply once a week, adjusting for rainfall. Ensure the soil stays moist but not waterlogged.

Arbequina Olive Tree Care Instructions:

  1. Watering During Establishment: During the first year, consistent watering is essential for helping the tree establish its roots. Water once a week during dry spells, increasing frequency if the weather is hot. Once established (after about 1-2 years), Arbequina Olive trees are drought-tolerant and need less frequent watering.
  2. Fertilization: In early spring, use a slow-release fertilizer formulated for fruit trees or one high in potassium and nitrogen to promote healthy growth and fruit production. Apply once a year, avoiding excessive fertilization, which can lead to weak growth.
  3. Monitoring for Pests and Diseases: Arbequina Olives are generally hardy but can occasionally face issues like scale, aphids, or fungal diseases. Regularly inspect the leaves for signs of pests, and apply neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed. Good air circulation and avoiding overwatering will help prevent fungal problems.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  1. Pruning: Prune your Arbequina Olive tree annually in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Focus on removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches to improve airflow and light penetration within the canopy. This also helps maintain a manageable size and shape. Thinning out the center encourages better fruit production.
  2. Harvesting: Arbequina Olives usually start producing fruit after 3-4 years. The olives ripen in the fall, turning from green to purple-black. They can be harvested for table olives or pressing into oil. Harvest when olives are ripe but before they over-mature, typically around late fall.
  3. Cold Protection: While Arbequina Olive trees are cold-hardy down to about 20°F (-6°C), it's a good idea to protect young trees from frost. Use frost blankets or move potted trees to sheltered areas during cold snaps.

Indoor and Container Gardening:

Arbequina Olive trees can be grown in containers, making them a good choice for patios or small spaces. Use a container at least 20 inches wide with drainage holes. Choose a well-draining potting mix designed for citrus or Mediterranean plants. Place the tree in full sun, either indoors near a sunny window or outdoors during warm months. Ensure at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Water when the top 2 inches of soil dry out, but avoid waterlogged conditions. In cooler regions, bring the tree indoors during winter months to avoid frost damage, transitioning it gradually to prevent shock. Regular pruning helps maintain a manageable size in containers.

By following these steps, your Arbequina Olive tree will thrive and produce delicious olives for years to come!

Description

Arbequina Olive Tree – The Perfect Indoor Plant with Bountiful Harvests

This plant can also be grown outdoors in zones 8-11, but it has become a houseplant favorite because of its compact size, and low-maintenance beauty.

The Arbequina Olive Tree (Olea europaea ‘Arbequina’) is a stunning, highly productive evergreen tree known for its compact size, silvery-green foliage, and ability to produce flavorful, high-quality olives. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a beginner, this Mediterranean beauty is easy to grow and provides both ornamental appeal and a delicious harvest of olives, perfect for oil or table use. The Arbequina Olive Tree is an excellent choice as an indoor plant, patio plant or garden addition, offering beauty and bounty year-round.

Key Features of Arbequina Olive Tree:

  • Delicious, Fruity Olives: Produces small, flavorful olives that are perfect for making olive oil or enjoying cured as table olives.
  • Compact & Versatile: Grows up to 15-20 feet tall but can be pruned to stay smaller, making it ideal for container planting, patios, or small gardens.
  • Cold Hardy & Heat Tolerant: Thrives in USDA Zones 8-11, but can be grown in containers and moved indoors in colder climates.
  • Evergreen Beauty: Year-round silvery-green leaves provide a lush, elegant appearance, whether grown as a focal point or accent plant.
  • Self-Pollinating: The Arbequina Olive Tree is self-pollinating, meaning a single tree will still produce plenty of olives, though more trees may increase your harvest.

Perfect for Patio or Garden Planting

The Arbequina Olive Tree is compact enough to be grown in containers, making it a perfect addition to patios, decks, or balconies. Its naturally rounded form and silvery-green leaves give it a classic Mediterranean look, adding beauty to any outdoor space. Even if you don’t live in a warm climate, this tree is easily grown in a pot and can be moved indoors when temperatures drop, allowing you to enjoy fresh olives no matter where you live.

Bountiful Harvest of Tasty Olives

One of the best features of the Arbequina Olive Tree is its ability to produce abundant harvests of small, flavorful olives. The olives are prized for their mild, fruity flavor, making them ideal for pressing into high-quality olive oil or curing for table use. Typically, olives are ready to harvest in the late fall, and a single tree can produce hundreds of olives once mature, giving you the chance to enjoy your own homegrown produce.

Self-Pollinating and Easy to Grow

The Arbequina Olive Tree is a low-maintenance, self-pollinating variety, which means you only need one tree to produce fruit. However, planting multiple trees can increase yields. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, requiring minimal water once established, making it drought-tolerant and ideal for warmer climates. Regular pruning helps maintain a manageable size and encourages healthy growth and fruit production. For container plants, make sure to use a well-draining pot and move them indoors during freezing weather in colder zones.

Year-Round Evergreen Appeal

In addition to producing delicious olives, the Arbequina Olive Tree is an attractive evergreen with silvery-green leaves that offer year-round beauty. Its elegant, compact shape makes it an excellent focal point or accent in landscapes, adding a touch of Mediterranean charm to your garden or patio. Indoors or outdoors, the tree adds lush greenery and texture that complements a variety of design styles.

Cold Hardy for a Wide Range of Climates

While the Arbequina Olive Tree thrives in hot, dry climates like those found in USDA Zones 8-11, it can also handle cooler temperatures better than many other olive varieties. In colder climates, simply grow your Arbequina in a container and bring it indoors when temperatures fall below freezing. This tree adapts well to indoor environments with plenty of sunlight, allowing it to grow in a sunny spot or even in front of a south-facing window.
