Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Fiddle-Leaf Fig Tree (Ficus lyrata):

  1. Choosing a Location: Fiddle-leaf figs thrive indoors in bright, indirect sunlight. Place the tree near a large, east-facing or south-facing window where it will receive plenty of light, but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Outdoors, they do well in warm, humid climates (USDA zones 10-12).
  2. Potting Mix & Container: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a peat-based mix with perlite or sand to improve drainage. Choose a container that has drainage holes and is 2-3 inches larger in diameter than the current root ball. Fiddle-leaf figs don’t like "wet feet," so proper drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
  3. Planting Depth: When planting your fiddle-leaf fig in its container, ensure that the top of the root ball sits just below the rim of the pot. Fill in around the root ball with fresh potting mix, gently pressing it down to eliminate air pockets. Avoid burying the trunk, as this can cause rot.
  4. Initial Watering: After planting, water the tree thoroughly until water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings, as fiddle-leaf figs prefer moist but not soggy soil. Be sure to empty the saucer under the pot to prevent standing water.

Care Instructions:

  1. Light: Fiddle-leaf figs love bright, indirect light. If your tree is not getting enough light, it may drop leaves or grow leggy. Rotate the plant every few weeks to ensure even light exposure, encouraging balanced growth.
  2. Watering: Water your fiddle-leaf fig when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry. Water thoroughly, ensuring the water drains out of the pot. In warmer months, you may need to water more frequently, while during winter months, reduce watering as growth slows. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  3. Humidity: Fiddle-leaf figs prefer moderate to high humidity (50% or higher). If your indoor air is dry, especially in winter, consider misting the leaves, placing the plant near a humidifier, or using a pebble tray filled with water to raise humidity levels around the tree.
  4. Fertilization: Feed the tree during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer (like 10-10-10) every 4-6 weeks. In winter, when the plant is dormant, stop feeding until growth resumes in spring.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  1. Pruning: Prune your fiddle-leaf fig to maintain its shape and control its size. Cut back leggy branches and remove any dead or damaged leaves. You can also prune to encourage branching by cutting above a leaf node. Be sure to clean your pruning shears to avoid spreading diseases.
  2. Leaf Cleaning: Dust can accumulate on the large leaves, reducing the plant’s ability to photosynthesize. Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep them clean and healthy. Avoid using commercial leaf shine products, which can clog the pores of the leaves.
  3. Repotting: Fiddle-leaf figs typically need to be repotted every 1-2 years, or when you notice the roots are circling around the pot’s interior or growing out of the drainage holes. Repot in spring, moving up to a container that is 2-3 inches larger in diameter. Fresh potting mix will provide new nutrients for continued growth.
  4. Pest Control: Fiddle-leaf figs are generally hardy but can occasionally be affected by pests like spider mites, aphids, or scale. If you notice signs of pests (such as webbing, yellow spots, or sticky residue on leaves), treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and wipe down the leaves to remove any pests.
  5. Temperature: Keep the fiddle-leaf fig in a stable environment, ideally between 60-75°F. Avoid placing it near drafts, heating vents, or air conditioning units, as extreme temperature fluctuations can stress the plant and lead to leaf drop.

Container/Indoor Growing for Fiddle-Leaf Fig:

  1. Container Size: Choose a sturdy container with good drainage, as the fiddle-leaf fig can become top-heavy. If your pot does not have drainage holes, consider drilling them, as this plant is highly sensitive to overwatering.
  2. Indoor Light: Indoors, place the plant where it will get bright, indirect light. If your home lacks sufficient natural light, consider using a grow light to supplement. Without enough light, fiddle-leaf figs can become leggy and drop their lower leaves.
  3. Humidity and Placement: As an indoor plant, fiddle-leaf figs benefit from increased humidity, especially in dry, heated homes. Mist the plant regularly, use a humidifier, or place it on a pebble tray with water. Keep the plant away from cold drafts or hot, direct sunlight through windows.
  4. Regular Rotation: Rotate your fiddle-leaf fig every few weeks to promote even growth, as they tend to grow toward the light source. This ensures a balanced shape and prevents uneven leaning.

By following these steps, your fiddle-leaf fig tree can thrive and grow into a stunning indoor plant.
