Planting & Care

White Wedding Hydrangea Planting Guide

The White Wedding Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'White Wedding') is a stunning deciduous shrub that produces large, pure white, cone-shaped flower clusters in summer. Known for its elegant appearance and relatively low maintenance, it’s a perfect choice for borders, garden beds, or container gardening. Here's how to plant and care for your White Wedding Hydrangea:

1. Planting Instructions

  • Location: Choose a spot that receives full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, hydrangeas prefer morning sun and afternoon shade to protect them from harsh midday heat. White Wedding Hydrangeas thrive in USDA zones 3-8.
  • Soil Preparation: Hydrangeas prefer well-draining, fertile soil. They can tolerate a range of soil types but do best in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5-6.5). If your soil is heavy clay or poor draining, amend it with organic matter like compost to improve aeration and drainage.
  • Planting Hole: Dig a hole that is twice the width of the root ball and about the same depth. Ensure the root crown (where the trunk meets the roots) is level with or slightly above the soil surface to prevent water from pooling around the base.
  • Planting: Place the hydrangea in the center of the hole and backfill with soil, firming it gently around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stems. Mulching helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.

2. Care Instructions (Establishment Period)

  • Watering: Hydrangeas need consistent moisture, especially during the first year after planting. Water deeply 1-2 times a week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. In hot or dry climates, you may need to water more frequently, especially during the summer.
  • Fertilizing: Feed the hydrangea in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 blend. If you prefer organic options, you can use compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil. Hydrangeas typically don’t require much fertilizer beyond this initial feeding.
  • Monitoring: Keep an eye on your plant for signs of stress, such as wilting or yellowing leaves. Ensure that it is not drying out or sitting in soggy soil. If leaf edges brown, it may be getting too much direct sun in hotter climates, and you might want to provide some afternoon shade.

3. Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  • Pruning: White Wedding Hydrangeas bloom on new wood (current season’s growth), so prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or weak branches, and trim lightly to shape the plant. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce the number of blooms.
  • Pest and Disease Control: White Wedding Hydrangeas are generally disease-resistant, but occasionally, they may suffer from powdery mildew or aphids. If necessary, treat fungal diseases with a fungicide and spray aphids with insecticidal soap. Make sure to plant them with good air circulation to prevent disease.
  • Cold and Winter Care: In colder zones (3-5), apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in late fall to protect the roots from freezing. Mature White Wedding Hydrangeas are cold-hardy, but young plants may need extra protection during their first winter.

4. Container Growing (Optional)

If you plan to grow your White Wedding Hydrangea in a container, here are a few additional tips:

  • Container Size: Choose a large container, at least 18-24 inches in diameter, with drainage holes. This will allow enough room for the roots to grow and prevent waterlogging.
  • Soil: Use a high-quality potting mix that drains well, and amend it with compost or perlite for added nutrients and drainage.
  • Watering: Container-grown hydrangeas need more frequent watering than those planted in the ground. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
  • Winter Care: In colder regions, move the container to a sheltered area, such as a garage or covered porch, during winter to protect the roots from freezing. If kept outdoors, wrap the container with insulating material to shield the roots from harsh conditions.

Why Choose Our White Wedding Hydrangeas

Stronger Roots Start with a Bigger Container
Some nurseries cut corners by offering bare root or small-pot White Wedding Hydrangeas, which often leads to transplant shock and slow establishment. We grow and ship our White Wedding Hydrangeas in large, 3-gallon containers filled with nutrient-rich soil. This ensures a mature, well-developed root system that takes hold quickly and encourages healthy, vigorous growth from day one.

Healthy Roots for Long-Term Success
Many growers squeeze hydrangeas into undersized pots to save on space and shipping, often resulting in root-bound plants that can’t take in water or nutrients effectively. Our White Wedding Hydrangeas are carefully cultivated in spacious 3-gallon planters, which has given their roots room to expand and develop fully. This means stronger, healthier plants that are ready to thrive in your landscape.

Authentic White Wedding Hydrangeas, Grown by Experts
Not every white hydrangea on the market offers the same quality or performance. Our White Wedding Hydrangeas are true to name and carefully propagated by experienced growers. Each plant delivers the signature pure white blooms, strong stems, and compact form that make this variety a favorite for elegant borders, foundation plantings, and standout garden displays.
