Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Washington Navel Orange Tree

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Grow Washington Navel outdoors in USDA zones 9 through 11 in full sun, the sunniest spot available. In colder areas, grow it in a large container and move it into a bright, protected indoor space for winter, near a very sunny window or under a grow light.
  2. Soil Preparation: Plant in rich, well-drained soil so water never stays around the roots, or use a quality citrus potting mix in containers. Avoid heavy clay and low spots, or plant on a slight mound.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, setting the tree level with or slightly above the soil. It grows about 8 to 15 feet tall and wide; container growing and light pruning keep it smaller. It arrives as a young 2 to 3 foot tree in a tall, narrow citra pot, so gently loosen any circling roots.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply right after planting to settle the soil. Outdoors, spread a thin ring of mulch, keeping it several inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water deeply, then allow the upper part of the soil to begin drying before watering again. Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering during hot weather, so check the soil often, and never let roots sit in water.
  2. Fertilizing: Feed with a citrus fertilizer that includes micronutrients from spring through late summer, usually every 6 to 8 weeks or as the label directs. Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Inspect leaves and stems for scale, mealybugs, aphids and spider mites, especially on trees kept indoors in winter, and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Yellow leaves usually point to overwatering, poor drainage or a need for fertilizer.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Prune lightly after harvest to keep the tree a manageable size, removing dead, crossing or crowded branches and any shoots that sprout from below the graft.
  2. Frost Protection: Protect the tree when temperatures fall below about 28 degrees F. Move container trees into a protected area before a hard freeze, cover young outdoor trees with frost cloth during unusually cold weather and water the soil before a cold night to help it hold warmth.
  3. Growing in Containers: Choose a large pot with drainage holes. Indoors in winter, place the tree near your sunniest south- or west-facing window or add a grow light, and move it back outdoors for full sun once nights stay mild in spring, acclimating it gradually.

Additional Tips for Growing Washington Navel Orange Tree

  1. Pollination: Washington Navel is self-fertile, so one tree produces oranges on its own. Outdoors, bees visiting the fragrant spring flowers help improve fruit set; indoors, gently brushing open blossoms does the same.
  2. Years to Fruit and Harvest: Young trees often begin fruiting within a few years. Fruit develops through the warm months and ripens in winter, holding well on the tree. Taste one before harvesting the rest. Due to state citrus regulations, it cannot ship to TX, FL, AZ or AL.
