Planting & Care

Tri-Color Dappled Willow Bush (Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki’) Planting Guide

1. Planting Instructions:

  • Location: The Tri-Color Dappled Willow thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the best color display, choose a spot where the bush will receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily.
  • Soil Preparation: This bush prefers moist, well-draining soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including clay, loamy, or sandy soils. It can even tolerate wetter areas. Before planting, loosen the soil in a wide area, about twice as wide as the root ball, and mix in compost to enrich the soil with nutrients.
  • Digging the Hole: Dig a hole that is slightly shallower than the root ball’s height and 2-3 times as wide. This will help prevent the plant from sinking and getting waterlogged when the soil settles.
  • Planting: Place the bush on a small mound of soil in the center of the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball sits just above the ground level. Backfill with soil, firming it gently as you go to remove air pockets.
  • Mulching: Add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (such as bark chips or shredded leaves) around the base, but keep it a few inches away from the stem. This helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around the roots. The soil should be consistently moist but not waterlogged.

2. Care Instructions (Establishment Period):

  • Watering: During the first growing season, water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells. The Tri-Color Willow is moisture-loving but sensitive to soggy conditions, so avoid overwatering.
  • Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer to encourage growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to weak growth.
  • Monitoring: Keep an eye out for pests like aphids or spider mites. If detected, treat the plant with a mild insecticidal soap. Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues.

3. Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  • Pruning: To maintain its shape and encourage the best color display, prune annually in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. You can trim lightly throughout the growing season to maintain its bushy form. Regular pruning also helps rejuvenate the foliage color.
  • Watering: Once established, the Tri-Color Dappled Willow is relatively drought-tolerant but will perform best with regular watering during dry periods. Keep the soil moist but ensure good drainage.
  • Pest Control: Monitor for any pest or disease issues as part of your routine care. Regular pruning and removing any damaged or diseased branches will help prevent problems.
  • Seasonal Tasks: Apply a fresh layer of mulch each spring to conserve moisture and protect the roots from temperature fluctuations.

Why Choose Our Tri-Color Dappled Willow Bush

True Tri-Color Dappled Willow, Grown by Experts
We propagate our Tri-Color Dappled Willow Bushes from verified stock to ensure you get the authentic variety—famous for its stunning pink, white, and green foliage. No off-types, no inconsistencies—just vibrant, reliable color and performance.

Proper Container Sizes for Healthy Roots
Some growers pack these fast-growing shrubs into undersized pots, causing root binding and stress. Others shift smaller bushes into larger pots just before shipping to make them appear bigger. We don’t cut corners. Our Tri-Color Dappled Willow Bushes are grown in appropriately sized containers from the beginning, ensuring strong root systems and vigorous, balanced growth.

Shipped in Soil, Never Bare Root
Bare root shipping can lead to dehydration and transplant shock, often stunting growth and delaying establishment. We ship every Tri-Color Dappled Willow Bush in a soil-filled container, protecting the roots and ensuring your plant arrives healthy, hydrated, and ready to thrive.

Grown for Longevity
Some nurseries rush these bushes to market before they’re truly ready, resulting in weak plants that fail to perform. We take the time to grow our Tri-Color Dappled Willow Bushes right, developing strong roots and dense branching for a shrub that establishes quickly and brings lasting beauty to your landscape.
