Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Thuja Virginian™ (Eastern Red Cedar):

  1. Location & Soil Preparation: Thuja Virginian™, also known as Eastern Red Cedar, thrives in full sun but can tolerate some light shade. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.5), but it’s highly adaptable and can grow in a variety of soil types, including sandy, clay, and even poor soils. Ensure the location has good drainage to avoid waterlogging, as this tree is drought-tolerant once established.
  2. Planting Depth & Spacing: Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, pressing gently around the base to eliminate air pockets. If planting Thuja Virginian™ as a hedge or windbreak, space trees 8-12 feet apart, depending on how dense you want the hedge to be.
  3. Initial Watering: After planting, water the tree thoroughly to settle the soil and help establish the roots. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, but keep mulch 3-4 inches away from the trunk to avoid rot.

Care Instructions:

  1. Watering: Water your Thuja Virginian™ deeply once a week during the first year, especially during dry periods. Once established, this tree is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, although occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells will promote healthier growth. Always allow the soil to dry out between waterings to avoid soggy roots.
  2. Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring if the soil is poor, but typically, Eastern Red Cedar does not require much fertilization. If desired, you can also use a light layer of compost or organic matter around the base in early spring to provide additional nutrients.
  3. Monitoring: Thuja Virginian™ is generally hardy and resistant to most pests and diseases, but watch for signs of cedar rust, bagworms, or spider mites. Regularly check the tree, especially in warm, humid weather, and prune away any affected branches to prevent the spread of diseases.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  1. Pruning: Thuja Virginian™ doesn’t require much pruning, but you can trim lightly in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can stunt growth. If you're using the tree as a hedge or screen, light pruning annually will help maintain its desired shape and density.
  2. Pest and Disease Control: Eastern Red Cedars are generally low-maintenance, but they can sometimes be affected by cedar-apple rust, a fungal disease that can cause orange galls on the branches. This is more common when planted near apple trees. To reduce risk, choose rust-resistant varieties or treat the tree with fungicide if needed. Bagworms can also be a problem; remove their bags manually and, if necessary, treat with an insecticide.
  3. Winter Care: Thuja Virginian™ is extremely hardy, suitable for USDA zones 2-9. No special winter protection is needed, but adding a layer of mulch before winter can help protect the roots in colder climates and prevent frost heaving. The tree’s dense foliage helps it withstand winter winds, making it an excellent choice for windbreaks or privacy screens.
  4. Growth and Longevity: Thuja Virginian™ is a long-living tree, with the potential to reach heights of 40-50 feet and spread of 12-15 feet. Its moderate growth rate makes it a good option for windbreaks, screens, and even individual specimen plantings.

Growing Thuja Virginian™ in Containers:

While Thuja Virginian™ is generally grown in the ground, it can be grown in containers for a period of time, especially when young. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Choosing a Container: Use a large container with drainage holes, at least 18-24 inches wide and deep, to accommodate the tree’s growing root system. A larger container will reduce the need for frequent repotting.
  2. Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally one designed for trees or shrubs, and add perlite or coarse sand for extra drainage. Avoid heavy, moisture-retaining soils.
  3. Watering and Fertilization: Container-grown Thuja will dry out more quickly than those planted in the ground, so water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer to ensure the tree receives enough nutrients in the confined space.
  4. Repotting: Every 2-3 years, repot the tree into a larger container or refresh the soil to avoid root congestion. Eventually, you will need to plant it in the ground as the tree matures and its size outgrows container life.

By following these instructions, your Thuja Virginian™ will thrive and become a beautiful, hardy addition to your landscape.

Elegant, pyramidal shape: Grows in a uniform, upright form, ideal for privacy hedges or as a striking focal point with a mature height of 15-20 feet.

Cold-hardy evergreen: Retains its rich green color year-round, even in harsh winter climates.

Low-maintenance and adaptable: Thrives in various soil types with minimal pruning, perfect for easy landscaping.
