Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for The Champion™ Sunblush Rose

  1. Site Selection and Soil Preparation:
The Champion™ Sunblush Rose thrives in full sun, so select a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Roses prefer well-drained, loamy soil enriched with organic matter, like compost. The ideal soil pH is between 6.0 and 6.5. Before planting, amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.
  2. Digging the Hole and Planting:
Dig a hole that is twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball of the rose. If you're planting bare-root roses, create a small mound of soil at the bottom of the hole to help spread out the roots. Place the rose bush so that the graft union (the swollen area where the rootstock and rose meet) is slightly above the soil line in warmer climates and about 1 inch below the soil in colder regions to protect it from freezing. Backfill with soil, firming it gently to eliminate air pockets.
  3. Watering and Mulching:
After planting, water the rose deeply to help settle the soil. Then, apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw, around the base of the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stem. Mulch helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering:
Water deeply once or twice a week, especially during dry periods. The goal is to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Roses do not tolerate soggy soil, which can lead to root rot. Water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry, as wet leaves can lead to fungal diseases.
  2. Fertilization:
Feed your Champion™ Sunblush Rose with a balanced, rose-specific fertilizer in early spring as new growth starts. Continue to fertilize every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season, but stop feeding about 6 weeks before the first expected frost. Organic options like compost or fish emulsion can also be used to enrich the soil naturally.
  3. Monitoring:
Check regularly for common rose issues like black spot, powdery mildew, and aphids. If you notice black or yellowing leaves, remove them promptly. To prevent diseases, make sure the plant has good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Insecticidal soap or neem oil can be used to control aphids or other pests.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning:
Prune your rose bush in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote air circulation and maintain the plant's shape. Cut just above an outward-facing bud, using sharp, sterilized pruning shears to prevent disease spread. Light deadheading of spent blooms throughout the growing season will encourage new flower production.
  2. Pest and Disease Control:
Roses are susceptible to several pests, such as aphids and spider mites, as well as diseases like black spot and powdery mildew. To minimize disease risks, ensure proper air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and clean up any fallen leaves or debris around the base of the plant. Use organic or chemical treatments if necessary, but aim for preventive care.
  3. Winter Protection:
In colder climates, mound soil or mulch around the base of the plant in late fall to protect the roots. If your area experiences harsh winters, consider covering the entire plant with burlap or rose cones to guard against frost damage.

Soft pink and yellow blooms: Features bicolor flowers with delicate pink edges and a warm yellow center, creating a stunning visual contrast.

Long blooming season: Provides continuous blooms from spring to fall with minimal maintenance.

Disease resistant: Bred for strong resistance to common rose diseases like black spot and mildew, ensuring healthy growth.
