Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Sprinter® Boxwood

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Plant Sprinter Boxwood in full sun to partial shade in USDA zones 5 through 8. In hotter climates, some protection from strong afternoon sun keeps the foliage rich green. Avoid deep shade, where growth may become thin. In colder areas, choose a spot sheltered from harsh winter wind.
  2. Soil Preparation: Choose well-drained soil and avoid spots where water stays around the roots, since boxwood roots dislike soggy ground. Loosen the soil in a wide area and mix in compost to improve structure and drainage.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, and set the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the ground. For a solid hedge, space plants 18 to 24 inches apart, center to center. For individual accent plants with space around them, allow closer to 3 to 4 feet between shrubs.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply right after planting to settle the soil. Spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping it away from the stems. Boxwood roots are shallow, so mulch helps keep them cool and moist.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water regularly while Sprinter Boxwood is becoming established so the soil stays evenly moist. Once established, keep the soil evenly moist during long dry periods, soaking the root zone deeply rather than giving frequent light sprinkles.
  2. Fertilizing: Feed in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer made for evergreens or boxwood. A light annual feeding supports its faster growth and deep green color. Avoid feeding after midsummer.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Watch for boxwood leafminer, psyllids and spider mites, which cause blistered, cupped or speckled leaves, and for leaf spotting or sudden leaf drop that can signal boxwood blight. Keep foliage dry when watering, allow air flow between plants and clean pruners between shrubs to limit disease spread.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Sprinter naturally stays dense and tidy, so heavy pruning is usually not needed. Leave it in its natural form for a softer look, or trim lightly for a formal hedge, ideally in late winter or early spring and again lightly after the spring flush if you want crisp lines.
  2. Winter Care: Sprinter is evergreen and keeps its green foliage through winter in most of its range. Water well before the ground freezes and plant out of harsh winter wind to help prevent bronzing and leaf burn.
  3. Growing in Containers: Sprinter grows well in large outdoor containers on porches, patios, decks and entryways. Choose a pot with good drainage and room for the roots, and water container plants more often, as pots dry out faster than garden beds.

Additional Tips for Growing Sprinter® Boxwood

  1. Faster Hedges: Developed as an improved form of Winter Gem Boxwood, Sprinter fills in faster than many traditional boxwoods, so hedges planted at 18 to 24 inches close in sooner. Plants mature at about 2 to 4 feet tall and wide.
  2. Pet Safety: Boxwood is toxic to pets and people if eaten. Place it where curious dogs or children will not chew on the leaves.
  3. Deer and Shipping: Deer usually leave boxwood alone. Due to state plant regulations, Sprinter Boxwood cannot ship to WY, WI, WA, UT, TN, PA, MT, ID, CA or AZ.

Sprinter® Boxwood: Fast-Growing Evergreen for Hedges, Borders, and Easy Landscaping

Get the classic look of boxwood without waiting as long for your landscape to fill in. Sprinter® Boxwood is a faster-growing improvement of the popular Winter Gem Boxwood, with dense evergreen foliage and a naturally neat, upright shape.

It is a great choice for hedges, foundation plantings, borders, formal gardens, and entryways. Sprinter® grows quickly, stays tidy with little pruning, and keeps its rich green color through every season.

Why You'll Love Sprinter® Boxwood

Faster Growth: Sprinter® Boxwood grows faster than many traditional boxwood varieties, helping hedges and borders fill in sooner.

Year-Round Evergreen Color: Dense green foliage stays attractive through spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Great for Hedges: Its upright, full growth makes it an excellent choice for low hedges and formal borders.

Naturally Tidy Shape: Sprinter® keeps a neat form with less trimming than many boxwoods.

Deer Resistant: Deer usually leave boxwood alone, making it a dependable choice in areas with browsing pressure.

Container Friendly: Grow Sprinter® in large outdoor planters for patios, porches, entryways, and other outdoor living spaces.

A Faster-Growing Boxwood for Quicker Results

The standout feature of Sprinter® Boxwood is its faster growth rate. It was developed as an improved form of Winter Gem Boxwood, giving you the same classic evergreen look with quicker fill.

This makes it a smart choice when you want to create a hedge, border, or foundation planting without waiting years for plants to grow together.

Dense Green Foliage in Every Season

Sprinter® Boxwood has thick evergreen foliage that gives your landscape structure all year long. Its rich green leaves create a clean backdrop for flowers, ornamental grasses, and other shrubs.

Because it stays evergreen, your hedge or border will continue to look full even during winter.

Where to Plant Sprinter® Boxwood

Low Hedges: Plant several in a row to create a neat evergreen hedge around garden beds, walkways, or outdoor spaces.

Foundation Plantings: Use it near your home to add year-round structure and a polished look.

Garden Borders: Line paths and planting beds with dense green foliage.

Formal Landscapes: Its tidy growth works well in structured gardens and symmetrical designs.

Entryways: Plant one or two near doors, steps, or walkways to create a clean, welcoming look.

Large Containers: Grow Sprinter® Boxwood in outdoor planters to add evergreen color to patios, porches, and entryways.

Sprinter® Boxwood Sun and Soil Needs

Sunlight: Sprinter® Boxwood grows well in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some protection from strong afternoon sun can be helpful.

Soil: Plant in well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water stays around the roots for long periods.

Watering: Water regularly while the shrub is becoming established. Once established, keep the soil evenly moist during long dry periods.

Perfect for Fast-Filling Boxwood Hedges

If your goal is to create a thick evergreen hedge, Sprinter® Boxwood is an excellent choice. Its faster growth helps neighboring plants fill the space between them sooner than many slower-growing boxwoods.

Its naturally upright growth also helps create a clean hedge shape without requiring constant trimming.

Easy Care With Less Pruning

Sprinter® Boxwood naturally stays dense and tidy, so regular heavy pruning is usually not needed.

You can leave it in its natural form for a softer look or lightly trim it to create a more formal hedge or border.

Classic Evergreen Style for Containers

Sprinter® also grows well in large outdoor containers. Its dense evergreen foliage can add year-round structure to porches, patios, decks, and entryways.

Choose a container with good drainage and enough room for the roots to grow comfortably.

Fast, Easy Evergreen Structure for Your Landscape

If you want a boxwood with faster growth, dense evergreen foliage, deer resistance, and easy-care form, Sprinter® Boxwood is an excellent choice.

Plant Sprinter® Boxwood for quicker hedges, year-round green color, and the classic boxwood look with less waiting and less maintenance.
