Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for ScentAmazing® Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides)

  1. Site Selection and Soil Preparation:
  • Location: Choose a spot with partial sun to light shade. Gardenias thrive in morning sun and some afternoon shade, especially in hot climates. Too much direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Soil: Gardenias prefer well-draining, acidic soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.5. You can amend the soil with organic matter, such as peat moss or compost, to improve drainage and lower the pH if necessary. A soil test can help determine if any adjustments are needed.
  • Digging: Dig a hole twice as wide and about as deep as the root ball. This helps loosen the surrounding soil and encourages better root establishment.
  1. Planting:
  • Place the ScentAmazing® Gardenia in the hole, making sure the top of the root ball is slightly above the surrounding soil to allow for settling.
  • Backfill the hole with a mix of native soil and compost or peat moss. Gently firm the soil around the roots without compacting it too much, ensuring good contact between the soil and roots.
  • Water deeply after planting to help the soil settle and eliminate air pockets.
  • Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stem. Mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Gardenias like moist but well-drained soil. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases—water at the base of the plant instead.
  2. Fertilizing: Feed your ScentAmazing® Gardenia with an acidic plant fertilizer, such as one designed for azaleas or camellias, in spring and again in summer. Follow the package directions, but be careful not to over-fertilize, as gardenias are sensitive to salt buildup in the soil. Adding organic compost or manure can also help improve nutrient availability.
  3. Monitoring: Watch for signs of stress, such as yellowing leaves, which may indicate an issue with watering, nutrient deficiencies, or pH imbalances. Regularly check the soil’s acidity and adjust if necessary.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Prune your Gardenia after the flowering period, which is typically in late summer. Remove any dead or damaged branches and shape the plant to encourage healthy growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as Gardenias bloom on old wood, so over-pruning could reduce next season’s flowers.
  2. Pest and Disease Control: Gardenias can be prone to pests like aphids, whiteflies, scale, and spider mites. Treat infestations with neem oil, insecticidal soap, or horticultural oil as needed. Fungal diseases, such as root rot and powdery mildew, can also occur if the soil is too wet or there’s poor air circulation. Ensure proper drainage and avoid overcrowding.
  3. Winter Care: In colder climates (zones 7 and below), Gardenias need protection from freezing temperatures. Mulch heavily around the base and cover the plant with burlap or frost cloth if temperatures drop below freezing. In warmer zones, minimal winter care is needed, but continue to monitor moisture levels, as drying winds can still stress the plant.

Why Choose Our ScentAmazing® Gardenia

True ScentAmazing®, Grown by Experts
We propagate genuine ScentAmazing® Gardenias from verified stock, ensuring you get the rich fragrance, continuous blooming, and compact form this variety is known for. No seed-grown inconsistencies—just true-to-type plants with dependable beauty and scent.

Proper Container Sizes for Healthy Root Systems
Some nurseries crowd gardenias into undersized pots, causing root binding and stress, which leads to poor performance after planting. Others shift smaller plants into larger pots right before shipping to make them look more mature. We grow our ScentAmazing® Gardenias in properly sized containers from day one, ensuring strong root systems for healthy, vigorous growth.

Shipped in Soil, Never Bare Root
Bare root shipping can expose gardenias to dehydration and transplant shock, delaying establishment and blooming. We ship every ScentAmazing® Gardenia in a soil-filled container, protecting the roots so your plant arrives healthy, hydrated, and ready to thrive.

Grown for Longevity and Performance, Not Quick Sales
We take the time to grow our ScentAmazing® Gardenias right—developing strong roots, balanced branching, and dense foliage. Our plants establish quickly and reward you with fragrant blooms and reliable beauty year after year.
