Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Scandia Juniper

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Plant Scandia Juniper in full to partial sun in USDA zones 3 through 7, ideally with at least six hours of direct sun. It performs best in northern and mid-range climates. In partial shade it spreads more slowly and can look thinner.
  2. Soil Preparation: Well-drained soil is important, since junipers dislike roots sitting in water. Loosen the soil across the planting area and clear weeds first.
  3. Planting: Dig each hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, setting plants level with the ground. Scandia forms a low, wide carpet about 6 feet across. Space plants 4 to 5 feet apart for groundcover, or closer to fill slopes faster.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply right after planting to settle the soil. Spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch around and between plants, keeping it a few inches away from the stems, to hold moisture and keep weeds down while the plants fill in.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water regularly while the roots settle in. In warmer zones, steady moisture during its first summer helps it establish. After that it is drought tolerant and usually needs water only during long dry stretches.
  2. Fertilizing: Junipers need little fertilizer. If growth is weak, apply a light slow-release fertilizer for evergreens in early spring. Rich soil and heavy feeding are not needed and can cause soft, floppy growth.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Watch for tip blight, which browns branch tips in wet springs, and prune out affected shoots in dry weather. Check for bagworms in early summer and spider mites during hot, dry spells, which cause dull, speckled foliage. Good air flow and dry foliage prevent most problems.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Very little pruning is needed once established. If branches reach onto walkways, trim them back to a side shoot. Avoid cutting into old, bare wood, since junipers rarely regrow from it.
  2. Winter Care: Scandia is very cold hardy and keeps its soft gray-green foliage through winter. Water deeply in fall before the ground freezes and refresh the mulch layer to protect roots through freeze and thaw cycles.

Additional Tips for Growing Scandia Juniper

  1. Slopes: Its spreading branches cover exposed soil on banks where rain moves soil or mowing is difficult. Mulch between young plants to reduce weeds until the branches meet and form continuous evergreen coverage.
  2. Berry-Like Cones: Mature plants may produce small blue berry-like cones that are ornamental and not meant to be eaten. Due to state plant regulations, it cannot ship to California.

Description

Scandia Juniper: Wide-Spreading Evergreen Groundcover for Easy Landscaping

Fill large spaces with soft, year-round color using Scandia Juniper. This low-growing evergreen forms a wide carpet of gray-green foliage that looks full and attractive in every season.

Growing only about 12–18 inches tall while spreading up to 8–10 feet wide, Scandia Juniper is a great choice for slopes, rock gardens, borders, mass plantings, and other areas where you want dependable ground coverage without much height.

Why You'll Love Scandia Juniper

Wide-Spreading Groundcover: Scandia Juniper can spread up to 10 feet wide, making it useful for covering large open areas.

Year-Round Evergreen Color: Soft gray-green foliage stays attractive through spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Great for Slopes: Its spreading growth helps cover bare soil and can help with erosion control.

Natural, Flowing Shape: Graceful branches arch outward for a soft look that works well around rocks, walls, and garden edges.

Blue Berry-Like Cones: Small blue cones add extra seasonal color and texture.

Drought Tolerant Once Established: After the roots are settled in, Scandia Juniper can handle dry periods with less watering.

A Low-Growing Evergreen That Covers Big Spaces

The biggest advantage of Scandia Juniper is its wide, spreading growth. It stays close to the ground while reaching several feet across, helping you fill large areas without using a tall shrub.

This makes it a smart choice for open slopes, broad garden beds, and places where grass can be difficult to grow or maintain.

Soft Gray-Green Color Through Every Season

Scandia Juniper has soft-looking gray-green foliage that stays on the plant all year. Its cool color works well with stone, gravel, flowering plants, ornamental grasses, and darker green evergreens.

The foliage also keeps the landscape looking full during winter, when many other plants have gone dormant.

Where to Plant Scandia Juniper

Slopes and Hillsides: Use it to cover sunny banks and help reduce exposed soil.

Rock Gardens: Its soft foliage and flowing branches look natural around rocks, boulders, and gravel.

Mass Plantings: Plant several together to create a large area of evergreen coverage.

Garden Borders: Use it along the edge of larger beds for low, spreading texture.

Open Landscape Areas: Its wide growth makes it useful for filling large spaces where you want less mowing and more evergreen color.

Scandia Juniper Sun and Soil Needs

Sunlight: Plant Scandia Juniper in full sun for the best growth and dense foliage.

Soil: This juniper grows best in well-drained soil. Avoid locations where water stays around the roots for long periods.

Watering: Water regularly while the plant is becoming established. Once the roots are settled in, Scandia Juniper becomes more drought tolerant.

Great for Slopes and Erosion Control

The wide, spreading branches of Scandia Juniper help cover exposed soil on slopes and banks. This makes it useful in areas where heavy rain can move loose soil or where mowing can be difficult.

Its low growth also keeps hillsides looking green and finished without adding too much height.

Blue Cones Add Extra Seasonal Interest

Scandia Juniper may produce small blue berry-like cones that add another layer of color to the plant.

These cones stand out against the gray-green foliage and give the shrub extra texture through the growing season.

Easy Care With Very Little Maintenance

Once established, Scandia Juniper is an easy evergreen to maintain. It usually needs very little pruning and can handle dry weather better than many other landscape plants.

Give it plenty of sun, good drainage, and regular water while it gets established. After that, it can provide dependable coverage with very little attention.

Dependable Evergreen Coverage for Years to Come

If you need a low-growing evergreen with wide coverage, soft gray-green foliage, drought tolerance, and easy-care growth, Scandia Juniper is an excellent choice.

Plant Scandia Juniper for year-round color, easy ground coverage, and a soft, natural look that fills large landscape spaces beautifully.
