Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Green Velvet Boxwood

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Plant Green Velvet Boxwood in full sun to partial shade in USDA zones 4 through 9. In hotter regions, some afternoon shade protects the foliage from scorch, and in colder areas a spot sheltered from harsh winter wind helps prevent bronzing. Avoid deep shade, where the shrub may grow thin.
  2. Soil Preparation: Choose well-drained soil and avoid areas where water sits around the roots, since soggy conditions can lead to root problems. Loosen the soil and work in compost to improve drainage in heavy ground.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, and set the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with the ground. For a continuous hedge, plant 2 to 3 feet apart, center to center. For stand-alone accent plants, give each one the full 3 to 4 feet of room it will reach at maturity.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply after planting. Add 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the shallow root zone, keeping it off the stems, to hold moisture and moderate soil temperature.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water regularly while the shrub is becoming established so the root zone stays evenly moist. Once established, it handles short dry periods better, but give a deep soaking during extended heat or drought.
  2. Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer for evergreens or boxwood in early spring as new growth begins. A light annual feeding keeps the foliage deep green. Skip late-season feeding.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Green Velvet has good resistance to many common pest and disease problems, but still check for boxwood leafminer, psyllids and spider mites, and watch for leaf spotting or sudden leaf drop that may signal boxwood blight. Keep foliage dry and clean pruners between plants.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Green Velvet needs very little pruning because it naturally grows into a soft, rounded mound. Leave it natural or trim lightly for a more formal look. Late winter or early spring, before new growth starts, is a good time for shaping.
  2. Winter Care: This evergreen keeps its dense green foliage through winter. In very cold, windy sites the leaves can bronze slightly but usually green up again in spring. Water deeply in fall before the ground freezes.
  3. Growing in Containers: Green Velvet grows well in large outdoor containers near doors, patios and porches. Choose a pot with good drainage and enough room for roots, and check soil moisture often, since containers dry out faster than garden beds.

Additional Tips for Growing Green Velvet Boxwood

  1. Hedge Planning: Plants mature at about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide and knit together into a solid evergreen line within a few seasons at 2 to 3 foot spacing. Fresh spring growth comes in lighter green for soft contrast.
  2. Pet Safety: Boxwood is toxic to dogs, cats and people if eaten, so plant it where pets and small children are not likely to chew on the leaves.
  3. Deer and Shipping: Green Velvet has good deer resistance. Due to state plant regulations, it cannot ship to TN, PA, CA or AZ.

Great for Hedges: Plant several together to create a clean, classic evergreen border.
