Planting Instructions for Golden Barberry

1. Choosing the Right Location: Pick a spot in full sun to partial shade, and aim for at least six hours of direct sunlight for the brightest golden leaves. In heavier shade the foliage turns more green than gold. Golden Barberry is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8, and in the hottest part of that range a little afternoon shade helps protect the leaves.
2. Soil Preparation: Choose well-drained soil. Golden Barberry adapts to clay, loam and sandy ground as long as water never sits around the roots, so avoid low spots that stay soggy after rain. 2. Winter Care: Golden Barberry handles cold winters well and returns each spring with fresh golden foliage. Water well in fall before the ground freezes, and refresh mulch to protect roots through freeze and thaw cycles. No wrapping or covering is needed in zones 4 through 8.
3. Growing in Containers: Plant in a large outdoor container with drainage holes and a quality potting mix for a bright accent on patios and porches. Containers dry out faster than the ground, so check moisture often in hot weather and water when the top inch feels dry.

1. Hedges and Barriers: Use several plants together for a colorful low hedge along walkways, foundations or property lines. The thorny branches also make an informal barrier that guides foot traffic, so keep plants a little back from paths where people brush past.
2. Deer Resistance: Golden Barberry is considered deer resistant, and its thorns discourage nibbling. No plant is completely deer-proof when food is scarce, but barberry is usually one of the last shrubs deer bother.
