Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Firefly Bush Honeysuckle

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Plant Firefly Bush Honeysuckle in USDA zones 3 through 8 in full sun, which produces the most flowers and the richest foliage color. It tolerates partial shade, though blooming may be lighter, so choose a spot with at least six hours of sun. It forms a tidy mound about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide.
  2. Soil Preparation: Firefly adapts to most well-draining soils. Loosen the soil in the planting area and mix in compost if it is heavy clay or very sandy. Avoid low spots where water collects after rain.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, placing the top of the root ball level with the ground. For a low hedge or foundation planting, space plants about 2 to 3 feet apart so they fill in as a continuous border of foliage and golden summer flowers.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Spread 2 inches of mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and block weeds, keeping it off the stems.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. After that, Firefly is drought tolerant and needs water mainly during extended dry spells. Container plants need more frequent watering, especially in summer heat.
  2. Fertilizing: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer, following label rates. A layer of compost each spring also works well. Too much fertilizer can reduce flowering and soften the foliage color.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Firefly is a tough shrub with few pest problems. Watch for occasional aphids on new growth and powdery mildew in humid, crowded spots. Proper spacing for airflow and watering at the base rather than overhead keep it healthy.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Shape as needed in early spring before new growth begins. Because it flowers on the current season's growth, spring trimming does not sacrifice blooms and can encourage a fuller, denser shrub. Remove any dead or damaged stems at the same time.
  2. Winter Care: Hardy to zone 3, Firefly handles very cold winters without special protection. Its structure adds interest to the winter landscape. For plants in containers, move pots to a sheltered spot in the coldest zones, since roots in pots are more exposed to freezing.
  3. Growing in Containers: Its compact size makes it a striking patio plant. Use a container with drainage holes and a quality potting mix, set it in full sun, and water whenever the top inch of soil feels dry.

Additional Tips for Growing Firefly Bush Honeysuckle

  1. Not an Invasive Honeysuckle: Firefly is a Diervilla, a group of shrubs native to North America, and is distinct from invasive Asian bush honeysuckles. It stays a tidy, well-behaved mound that suits gardens of any size.
  2. Pollinator Appeal: Its fragrant, tubular yellow flowers bloom from late spring through summer and attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Plant it near a patio or window to enjoy the activity.
  3. Deer Resistance: Once established, Firefly is deer resistant and rarely bothered, making it a practical choice where deer browse other shrubs. No plant is completely deer-proof, but this one holds up well.
