Planting Instructions for Double Knock Out® Roses

  1. Site Selection and Soil Preparation:
    Double Knock Out® Roses thrive in full sun, so choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. They are adaptable to various soil types but perform best in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is heavy clay or sandy, amend it with compost to improve texture and drainage.

  2. Planting:
  • Digging the Hole: Dig a hole about twice as wide and slightly shallower than the root ball. This will allow the roots to spread outward more easily. The top of the root ball should sit about 1 inch above the ground level to prevent water from pooling around the base.

  • Mound Technique: Create a small mound at the bottom of the hole to position the root ball on, which keeps the plant slightly elevated and helps prevent drowning when the soil settles after watering.

  • Backfilling: Place the rose in the hole and fill in with soil, pressing gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to help the soil settle.

  • Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch (such as shredded bark or straw) around the base of the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stem to prevent rot. Mulch helps to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weeds.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering:
    Water deeply 1-2 times per week during the first growing season to help the rose establish strong roots. After it’s established, Double Knock Out® Roses are fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from watering during dry periods. Avoid getting the leaves wet, as this can promote fungal diseases.

  2. Fertilization:
    Fertilize in early spring with a balanced rose fertilizer (such as 10-10-10). You can repeat fertilizing after the first bloom cycle to encourage continued flowering, and again in mid-summer if the plant seems to need a boost. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms.

  3. Monitoring for Issues:
    Double Knock Out® Roses are highly resistant to common rose diseases like black spot and powdery mildew, but you should still monitor them regularly for signs of pests such as aphids or Japanese beetles. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning:
    Prune your Double Knock Out® Rose in early spring (late winter in warm climates), just as new growth begins. Cut back the plant to about 12–18 inches from the ground, removing any dead or damaged branches. This encourages healthy new growth and abundant blooming throughout the season. Light pruning after each bloom cycle (deadheading spent flowers) can also help promote new flowers, though this variety will rebloom even without deadheading.

  2. Pest and Disease Control:
    Although Double Knock Out® Roses are resistant to many rose diseases, occasional monitoring for issues like aphids or Japanese beetles is important. Regularly inspect the leaves and stems, and use neem oil or insecticidal soap to manage any minor infestations. For fungal issues like rust or mildew, ensure proper air circulation by pruning regularly and avoid overhead watering.

  3. Winter Protection:
    In colder climates (USDA zones below 5), apply a heavy layer of mulch (4–6 inches) around the base of the plant in late fall to protect the roots from freezing. You can also wrap the plant with burlap or frost cloth if extreme cold is expected. Remove the protection in early spring once the risk of frost has passed.
