Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Blue Point Juniper Topiary

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Blue Point Juniper Topiary grows in direct or indirect light, but for the densest, most colorful blue-green foliage, give it plenty of sun, since junipers tend to thin out in heavy shade. A bright patio, sunny entryway, or open garden bed is ideal. It grows well in USDA Zones 4 through 9, handling cold northern winters and warm southern summers.
  2. Soil Preparation: Blue Point Juniper needs well-draining soil and does not tolerate soggy roots. It adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils, as long as water does not pool. In containers, use a quality potting mix and make sure the pot has drainage holes.
  3. Planting: In the ground, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Set the topiary upright, backfill, and firm gently. Left unpruned, Blue Point can reach 12 to 15 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, but as a topiary it is kept much smaller with regular trimming.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply right after planting to settle the soil. Add a thin layer of mulch over the root zone, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk, to hold moisture and keep roots cool.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water a newly planted topiary deeply once or twice a week through its first growing season, letting the top couple of inches dry between waterings. Once established, it is drought tolerant and needs little extra water in the ground, though potted topiaries dry out faster and need regular checks in summer.
  2. Fertilizing: Junipers are light feeders. Apply a slow-release evergreen or balanced shrub fertilizer in early spring, following label rates. Container topiaries benefit most, since regular watering gradually washes nutrients out of the pot.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: This hardy juniper is disease resistant, but check it occasionally for spider mites in hot, dry weather and for bagworms, which look like small hanging cones. Pick off bagworms by hand. Good drainage and airflow help prevent root rot and tip blight.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Lightly shear new growth to keep the ball shapes crisp, usually in late spring and again in mid-summer if needed. Trim only the green outer growth, since junipers generally do not regrow from bare, woody stems. Keep the trunk sections between the balls clear of shoots.
  2. Winter Care: In the ground, Blue Point handles winters well across Zones 4 through 9. In containers, roots are more exposed to cold, so in the colder end of that range move the pot to a sheltered spot or wrap it in burlap or bubble wrap. Water before the ground freezes so the foliage does not dry out in winter wind.
  3. Growing in Containers: Its compact size makes it ideal for container planting, so you can move it around your patio or use it as an entryway accent. Choose a heavy pot with drainage holes to keep the topiary from tipping in wind, and repot into a slightly larger container every few years.

Additional Tips for Growing Blue Point Juniper Topiary

  1. Choosing a Size: The topiary comes as a 1 gallon single-ball topiary, a 2 gallon double-ball topiary, or a 5 gallon double-ball topiary. The larger containers offer a bigger, more established plant for immediate impact at a front entrance or patio.
  2. Year-Round Structure: Blue Point Juniper is evergreen and keeps its blue-green foliage all year, adding texture and drawing the eye upward even in winter. Use a matched pair to frame a doorway or steps for a balanced, formal look.
