Planting & Care

Bird of Paradise Indoor Planting and Care Guide

The Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is a stunning tropical plant known for its vibrant, exotic flowers resembling the shape of a bird in flight. Though it can grow outdoors in warmer climates, it thrives indoors when given the right conditions. With its striking large leaves and unique flowers, it adds a lush, tropical vibe to your indoor space. Here’s how to successfully plant and care for a Bird of Paradise indoors:

1. Planting Instructions (Indoor)

  • Location: Choose a bright location where the plant will receive bright, indirect light or direct sunlight. Bird of Paradise needs at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily to thrive and bloom indoors. South or west-facing windows are ideal. If growing in low light, the plant will survive but may not bloom.
  • Container Size: Select a pot that is slightly larger than the plant’s root ball, with good drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Bird of Paradise prefers to be slightly root-bound, so don’t choose a pot that’s too large. Repot only when the roots are visibly outgrowing the container, typically every 2-3 years.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A general-purpose potting mix combined with perlite or sand works well to improve drainage. Avoid heavy or water-retaining soils, as they can lead to root rot.
  • Planting: Place the Bird of Paradise in the container and fill around the root ball with potting mix. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.

2. Care Instructions (Indoor)

  • Light: Provide your Bird of Paradise with as much light as possible. It thrives in bright, indirect light but can handle direct sunlight indoors, especially in the morning. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and no blooms.
  • Watering: Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains out of the pot. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water. Reduce watering in winter, as the plant's growth slows.
  • Humidity: Bird of Paradise enjoys moderate to high humidity, but it can tolerate average indoor humidity levels. To increase humidity, especially in dry climates or during winter, mist the leaves occasionally or place the plant near a humidifier.
  • Temperature: Maintain warm indoor temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid placing the plant near cold drafts, air conditioners, or heat sources like radiators.
  • Fertilizing: Feed the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) once a month. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove dead or damaged leaves by cutting them off at the base with clean scissors or pruning shears. This helps keep the plant healthy and attractive. Occasionally wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust, which can block light absorption.

3. Long-Term Care and Maintenance (Indoor)

  • Repotting: Bird of Paradise plants prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repot every 2-3 years in the spring. When repotting, choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one to encourage blooming. If the plant has outgrown its space but you want to keep it smaller, trim the roots slightly when repotting.
  • Blooming: Although Bird of Paradise can grow large, indoor plants may take 3-5 years to bloom. To encourage flowering, ensure the plant gets plenty of light and is slightly root-bound. Blooms typically appear in late winter or spring.
  • Pest Control: Common indoor pests for Bird of Paradise include spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. If you notice any pests, wipe the leaves with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Keeping the plant healthy and well-maintained reduces the likelihood of pest infestations.
  • Growth and Size: Indoor Bird of Paradise can grow 3-6 feet tall, depending on the care it receives. While they can tolerate being somewhat root-bound, it’s important to provide enough space for them to grow tall.

Additional Tips for Success

  • Rotation: Rotate the plant every few weeks to ensure all sides receive equal light and to promote balanced growth.
  • Outdoor Time: If possible, move your Bird of Paradise outdoors during the warm months. Place it in a bright, indirect light area to mimic natural conditions, but avoid direct harsh afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves.

The Bird of Paradise Plant thrives 4-11 patio / 9-11 outdoors.
