Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Bellini® Grape Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica ‘Bellini Grape’)

  1. Site Selection and Soil Preparation:
  • Location: Choose a spot with full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) to ensure optimal blooming. Crape myrtles thrive in sunny conditions, which encourage the best flowering and healthiest growth.
  • Soil: Bellini Grape Crape Myrtle prefers well-draining soil and is adaptable to a range of soil types, from sandy to clay soils. It performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.5). If your soil is heavy or poorly draining, amend it with organic matter like compost to improve aeration and drainage.
  • Spacing: Plant Bellini Grape Crape Myrtles about 3-5 feet apart for use as a small hedge or border, or provide adequate space around it as a stand-alone plant.
  • Digging: Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball to allow for easy root expansion and proper drainage.
  1. Planting:
  • Place the plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil to prevent water from pooling around the base.
  • Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots to eliminate air pockets, but avoid compacting the soil too tightly.
  • Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.
  • Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping the mulch a few inches away from the trunk. Mulch helps retain moisture, control weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: During the first growing season, water deeply once or twice a week to establish a strong root system. Once established, Bellini Grape Crape Myrtles are drought-tolerant and require less frequent watering. Water only during extended dry periods, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.
  2. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) in early spring before new growth starts to encourage healthy development and abundant blooms. Avoid excessive fertilization, as too much nitrogen can lead to fewer blooms and more foliage. Alternatively, you can use organic compost or slow-release fertilizer to boost soil fertility.
  3. Monitoring: Keep an eye out for signs of stress, such as wilting or yellowing leaves, which could indicate improper watering or soil drainage issues. Bellini Grape Crape Myrtles are generally hardy but may be affected by pests like aphids or powdery mildew in very humid climates.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

Pruning: Bellini Grape Crape Myrtle requires minimal pruning but can benefit from light shaping to encourage better growth and flowering. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

  • Shaping: Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches and thin out dense areas to improve airflow and light penetration.
  • Encouraging Blooms: Since crape myrtles bloom on new wood, trimming lightly in late winter will encourage more flower production in the upcoming season.
  • Avoid heavy pruning, often referred to as "crape murder," which involves cutting back large portions of the plant. Instead, focus on gentle thinning and shaping.

Pest and Disease Control: Bellini Grape Crape Myrtle is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, you may encounter aphids or powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions.

  • To prevent powdery mildew, ensure the plant gets good airflow and avoid overhead watering. If mildew appears, treat with a fungicide or neem oil.
  • For aphids, use insecticidal soap or neem oil to control infestations.
  1. Winter Care: Bellini Grape Crape Myrtle is hardy in USDA zones 6-10. In colder regions (zones 6-7), apply a thick layer of mulch around the base in late fall to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. Although the plant will die back in colder winters, it will often re-sprout from the roots in spring.

Flowering and Seasonal Care

  • Bloom Time: Bellini Grape Crape Myrtle blooms from mid-summer to early fall, producing clusters of vibrant purple flowers. Deadheading (removing spent blooms) can encourage a second bloom later in the season, extending the flowering period.
  • Fall Interest: In addition to beautiful summer blooms, the plant offers year-round interest with attractive peeling bark and dark green foliage that can turn reddish-orange in fall.
  • Seasonal Maintenance: Apply fresh mulch each spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health. Fertilize in early spring and provide supplemental water during dry periods to ensure strong growth and flower production.

Compact and dwarf-sized: Reaches only 3-4 feet tall, perfect for small gardens, containers, or borders.

Vibrant purple blooms: Rich grape-colored flowers bloom profusely throughout summer, adding bold color to your landscape.

Low-maintenance: Resistant to mildew and drought-tolerant, requiring minimal care once established.
