Weeping Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Pendula’) Planting Guide

1. Planting Instructions:

Location: The Weeping Norway Spruce prefers full sun (6-8 hours of sunlight) but can tolerate some partial shade. Choose a location where it has enough space to spread and grow into its unique cascading form. It also appreciates good air circulation to avoid fungal problems.
Soil Preparation: This spruce grows best in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal, but it can adapt to clay soil if well-drained. Amend heavy soils with compost or sand to improve drainage.
Digging the Hole: Dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than the root ball’s height. The root flare (where the trunk widens into the roots) should sit just above the ground level.
Planting: Set the tree on a small mound of soil in the center of the hole, keeping the top of the root ball slightly above ground level. Fill the hole with native soil mixed with compost, firming it down gently to remove air pockets.
Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree, extending out to the dripline (the outermost edge of the branches). Keep the mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.
Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Ensure the soil stays consistently moist during the first year as the tree establishes its roots, but avoid waterlogged conditions.

2. Care Instructions (Establishment Period):

Watering: Water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season, especially during dry spells. The soil should remain evenly moist but not soggy. Use a soaker hose or slow trickle method to ensure deep watering.
Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as a 10-10-10 formula) to encourage healthy growth. If your soil is particularly poor, a second light feeding in early summer is beneficial. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can cause excessive, weak growth.
