Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Syngonium Strawberry

  1. Light: Syngonium 'Strawberry' does best in bright, indirect light, which keeps its blush-pink color strongest. It tolerates lower light, but its colors may fade slightly toward green. Keep it out of harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate pink leaves.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Use a well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. The soil should stay slightly moist but never soggy, since overwatering can lead to yellow leaves and root rot.
  3. Placement: It grows 12 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, so it fits nicely on a side table, desk, or shelf. Keep it between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and chilly windows in winter.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry, keeping the soil slightly moist but not soggy. It needs less water in winter when growth slows, so check the soil before each watering rather than following a fixed schedule.
  2. Humidity: This Syngonium thrives in high humidity. Mist it regularly, use a pebble tray, or place it near a humidifier. Higher humidity keeps the leaves soft and colorful and helps prevent crispy brown edges. Bright bathrooms and kitchens are great spots.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength about once a month in spring and summer to support fresh, colorful growth. Skip feeding in fall and winter.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check leaf undersides and new growth every few weeks for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs, which are more common in dry air. Rinse the leaves or wipe them with a damp cloth, and treat any infestation with insecticidal soap.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot in spring when roots fill the pot or grow out of the drainage holes, moving up just one pot size with fresh, well-draining mix. Water it well afterward and keep it out of harsh sun for a few days while it settles in.
  2. Pruning for a Bushier Plant: Prune long stems just above a leaf node to encourage new branching. Regular pruning keeps the plant compact and promotes fresh leaves, which often show the strongest blush-pink color. You can also let it trail from a hanging basket or climb a moss pole.
  3. Propagation: The cuttings from pruning root easily in water. Once roots form, pot them up in moist, well-draining mix, or add them back to the original pot to make it fuller.

Additional Tips for Syngonium Strawberry

  1. Pet Safety: Syngonium 'Strawberry' is toxic to cats and dogs. Like other arrowhead plants, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf or in a hanging basket away from pets.
  2. Keeping It Pink: Bright, indirect light and higher humidity keep the leaves pink. In lower light, the pink tones may fade toward green, and mature leaves naturally shift toward a mix of pink and cream. Pruning encourages colorful new leaves.
  3. Yellow Leaves or Crispy Edges: Yellow leaves usually mean overwatering, so let the top inch of soil dry before watering again. Crispy brown edges point to dry air, so raise humidity with misting, a pebble tray, or a humidifier.
  4. Shipping Note: Syngonium 'Strawberry' cannot be shipped to Arizona or Oregon because of state shipping restrictions on this plant. Orders to other states ship as usual, so customers in AZ or OR will need to choose a different plant.
