Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Pre-Potted 'Minerva' Amaryllis

  1. Light: Set your 'Minerva' Amaryllis in a bright, sunny spot indoors, such as near a south or west window. Good light keeps the flower stalk sturdy and the red and white blooms richly colored. Once the flowers open, move the pot slightly out of direct hot sun to help the blooms last longer.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Your bulb arrives already planted, so there is no digging or potting to do. Check that excess water can drain away from the bulb, and if the pot sits inside a decorative sleeve or saucer, empty any water that collects there so the bulb never sits in soggy soil.
  3. Placement: Choose a warm room, ideally around 68 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, to encourage faster growth. Keep the pot away from cold drafts, heating vents, and doors that open to the outside. A dining table near a window, a bright mantel, or a sunny sill all make a festive home for it.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water sparingly until growth appears, since too much water before roots and leaves develop can rot the bulb. Once the stalk and leaves are actively growing, water when the top inch of soil feels dry, always letting excess drain away from the pot.
  2. Temperature and Humidity: Average household humidity is fine for amaryllis. Warmth speeds growth, and most bulbs bloom about 6 to 10 weeks after they start growing. Once flowers open, keeping the plant in a slightly cooler room stretches the display, and each bloom can last for weeks.
  3. Fertilizing: The bulb holds the energy it needs for this season's flowers, so no fertilizer is needed before blooming. After flowering, feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer every few weeks through spring and summer to help the bulb rebuild for next year.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the leaves and the neck of the bulb occasionally for mealybugs or spider mites, and wipe them away with a damp cloth or insecticidal soap. Fungus gnats around the soil usually mean it is staying too wet, so let it dry more between waterings.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Staking and Rotating: The flower stalk typically reaches 12 to 18 inches tall, and stalks grown in low light stretch taller. Turn the pot every few days so the stem grows straight toward the light, and use a small stake if the large blooms start to lean.
  2. After the Flowers Fade: Cut off the spent flower stalk about an inch above the bulb once it fades, but keep the leaves growing. The leaves feed the bulb, so keep the pot in bright light and continue to water and feed it through spring and summer.
  3. Reblooming: In late summer or fall, stop watering for about 8 to 10 weeks of dormancy and let the leaves die back. Then resume watering to start the cycle again. In frost-free climates, roughly USDA Zones 8 to 10, the bulb can be planted outdoors after flowering instead.

Additional Tips for 'Minerva' Amaryllis

  1. Pet Safety: Amaryllis is toxic to cats and dogs. The bulb is the most toxic part, but leaves and flowers can also cause vomiting, drooling, and stomach upset if chewed. Place your 'Minerva' Amaryllis where pets cannot reach it, and contact your veterinarian if you suspect your pet has eaten any part of it.
  2. Troubleshooting: A leaning stalk means the plant needs more even light, so rotate it more often. Yellowing leaves before or during bloom usually mean overwatering. If no stalk appears after several weeks, move the pot somewhere warmer and brighter. Yellow leaves in late summer are normal as the bulb prepares to rest.
