Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Watermelon Peperomia

  1. Light: A Watermelon Peperomia grows in direct or indirect light and does best in bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch or fade its silver-striped leaves. In low light the stems stretch and the pattern becomes less vivid.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Peperomias have small root systems and like being snug, so keep it in a small pot with drainage holes. A chunky, well-draining mix with added perlite helps prevent root rot.
  3. Placement: It grows 8 to 12 inches tall and 8 to 12 inches wide and stays compact and neat, perfect for desks, shelves, windowsills, and small apartments. Keep it away from cold drafts and heating vents, and turn the pot occasionally for even growth.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the soil has dried slightly, usually when the top inch or two feels dry. Its thick, succulent-like leaves store water, so it needs less than many houseplants. Overwatering is the most common problem, so err on the side of too little.
  2. Humidity: Watermelon Peperomia appreciates moderate humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. If your home is very dry in winter, a pebble tray or grouping it with other plants helps keep the leaves firm and glossy.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength about once a month in spring and summer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter. Peperomias are light feeders, and too much fertilizer can burn the roots.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check leaf undersides and stem bases now and then for mealybugs and spider mites. Fungus gnats indicate the soil is staying too wet. Wipe pests away with a damp cloth or insecticidal soap and let the soil dry more between waterings.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot only when it outgrows its pot, usually every two to three years. Spring is best. Move up just one pot size and use a chunky, well-draining mix with added perlite.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Pinch off any damaged or yellow leaves at the base of their stems, and trim stretched stems to keep the plant compact. Gently wipe the glossy leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust.
  3. Propagation: Propagate from leaf cuttings. Cut a healthy leaf with its stem, or cut a leaf in half across the middle, and insert the cut edge into moist potting mix. Keep it warm and bright, and new plantlets usually appear in several weeks.

Additional Tips for Watermelon Peperomia

  1. Pet Safety: Watermelon Peperomia is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs, making it a great choice for homes with curious pets. As with any houseplant, eating a lot of it may cause a mildly upset stomach, but it is not considered poisonous.
  2. Troubleshooting: A drooping plant is usually either thirsty or overwatered. If the soil is bone dry and leaves feel soft, water thoroughly. If the soil is wet and stems look dark or mushy at the base, the roots may be rotting, so let it dry out and improve drainage. Faded stripes mean too much sun.
