Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Baby Rubber Plant

  1. Light: Place your Peperomia Baby Rubber Plant in bright, indirect light. It adapts well to low light, but growth there becomes slower and leggy. Gentle morning sun is fine, but avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch its glossy leaves.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as standard houseplant soil blended with perlite or orchid bark. Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent overwatering issues, and choose a container only slightly larger than the root ball.
  3. Placement: Keep it where temperatures stay between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, away from cold drafts in winter. It typically grows 12 to 24 inches tall and wide with a bushy, upright habit, making it ideal for desktops, shelves, dorm rooms and other small spaces.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry, then let the excess drain away. Its thick, semi-succulent leaves store water, so it tolerates some dryness, while overwatering can lead to root rot. When in doubt, err on the side of underwatering, and water less in winter.
  2. Humidity: This Peperomia tolerates average household humidity and does not need the high humidity many tropical plants demand. Occasional misting is appreciated in very dry homes, but it is not essential.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer. Skip feeding in fall and winter when growth slows. Light, regular feeding keeps its thick leaves glossy and its growth full and upright.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check stems and leaf undersides every few weeks for mealybugs, spider mites and fungus gnats. Wipe pests off with a damp cloth or treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Letting the soil dry between waterings discourages fungus gnats.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot every few years when roots fill the pot, moving up one pot size in spring. Use fresh, well-draining mix with perlite or orchid bark, and water lightly afterward.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Pinch or snip leggy stems just above a leaf to keep the plant compact and bushy. Remove any yellow leaves promptly. Wipe the glossy leaves with a soft damp cloth every few weeks to remove dust and keep them shining.
  3. Propagation: Propagating is easy. Cut a healthy stem with a few leaves and place it in water or moist soil. New roots typically appear within a few weeks. Once roots are an inch or two long, pot the cutting in a well-draining mix.

Additional Tips for Baby Rubber Plant

  1. Pet Safety: The Baby Rubber Plant (Peperomia obtusifolia) is non-toxic and safe for cats, dogs and children. That makes it a worry-free choice for households with pets that like to nibble on greenery, and a great pick for kids' rooms or low shelves.
  2. Not a Rubber Tree: Despite the name, this plant is not related to the rubber tree, Ficus elastica. It gets its nickname from its plump, glossy, rubbery-textured leaves. Unlike a Ficus, it stays compact and is safe for pets.
  3. Troubleshooting: Leaves falling off, especially with soft stems at the base, are most often caused by overwatering, so let the soil dry more and check that the pot drains well. Sudden cold drafts can also cause leaf drop. Leggy growth means it needs brighter indirect light.
