Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Peperomia 'Marble' Baby Rubber Plant

  1. Light: Give your Peperomia 'Marble' bright, indirect light to keep its creamy variegation strong. Too little light reduces the marbling, while harsh direct sun can scorch the leaves. An east-facing window or a spot with filtered light is ideal.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent soggy roots. A mix designed for succulents works well, or you can add perlite to standard potting soil. Always choose a pot with drainage holes so extra water can escape and the roots stay healthy.
  3. Placement: At 8 to 12 inches tall and 6 to 12 inches wide, this compact plant is perfect for desks, bookshelves, and tabletops. Keep it in a warm room between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, protected from drafts and cold windows, which can cause leaf drop.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil are dry. Its succulent-like leaves store water, so overwatering is the most common mistake. The plant is forgiving if you occasionally forget, and it needs even less water in winter.
  2. Humidity: Peperomia 'Marble' thrives in average household humidity and does not need special care. Occasional misting can give it a boost in very dry conditions. Because it is so adaptable, it is a great choice for beginners and busy plant owners.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength about once a month during spring and summer. Skip feeding in fall and winter. Peperomias are light feeders, so too much fertilizer does more harm than good.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the stems and leaf joints occasionally for mealybugs and the leaf undersides for spider mites. Fungus gnats hovering over the soil are a sign it is staying too wet. Treat pests with insecticidal soap and let the soil dry more between waterings.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Peperomias have small root systems and like a snug pot, so repot only when roots fill the container, usually every few years. Repot in spring into a pot just one size larger with fresh, well-draining mix.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Pinch or trim leggy stems just above a leaf to keep the plant full and bushy. If a stem produces only solid green leaves, trim it back to encourage variegated growth. Wipe the glossy leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust.
  3. Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Snip a stem with a few leaves just below a node, remove the lowest leaf, and root it in water or moist, well-draining soil. New roots usually form within a few weeks in bright, indirect light.

Additional Tips for Peperomia 'Marble'

  1. Pet Safety: The Peperomia 'Marble' Baby Rubber Plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe option for homes with furry friends. It is not related to the toxic rubber tree, Ficus elastica, despite the similar name. Eating a lot of any plant can still cause a mild upset stomach.
  2. Leaves Falling Off: Leaves usually fall off because of overwatering, cold drafts, or sudden changes in environment. Check that the soil dries between waterings and move the plant away from cold windows or vents. Soft, mushy stems indicate root rot from excess water.
  3. Losing Variegation: The plant loses its marbling mainly when it does not get enough light. Move it to a brighter spot with indirect light and new leaves should show more creamy variegation.
