What makes our Leyland Cypress Trees different?

We Never Ship Bareroot: other online nurseries may send you "bare root" evergreens, where there is no soil to feed your tree's roots, and no pot to protect them. This is very risky, and has a high failure rate when planting. All our plants come well-rooted in dirt, protected by pots.

Accurate Heights: some nurseries include the pot and roots in their measurement. This means that their "5-6 ft. tree" might only be three feet tall after you plant it! We measure all our trees above the ground. Rest assured that when you purchase a "5-6 ft. tree" from us, it'll actually be that tall in the ground.

Well-Developed Roots: your plant's roots will be strong and healthy, guaranteed. Strong roots means they'll arrive ready for planting, and will soon show explosive growth!

Planting & Care

Leyland Cypress Tree Planting Instructions:

  1. Site Selection & Soil Preparation: The Leyland Cypress thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring at least 6 hours of sunlight per day for optimal growth. Choose a well-draining location, as these trees do not tolerate standing water or poor drainage. While adaptable to various soil types, Leyland Cypress performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5-7.5). Dig a hole slightly shallower than the root ball and twice as wide. Ensure the top of the root ball sits slightly above the surrounding soil level to prevent water from collecting around the base.
  2. Spacing & Mulching: If planting for a hedge or privacy screen, space Leyland Cypress trees 6-10 feet apart. For individual trees, leave 15-20 feet of space to allow for their full mature spread. After planting, apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (such as wood chips or bark) around the base of the tree, but keep it several inches away from the trunk to avoid rot. Mulch helps conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
  3. Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting to help the soil settle around the roots. For the first few months, water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water 1-2 times per week, adjusting based on weather and soil conditions. Once established, Leyland Cypress trees become more drought-tolerant, but occasional deep watering during dry spells helps maintain healthy growth.

Leyland Cypress Tree Care Instructions:

  1. Watering During Establishment: During the first year, maintain consistent watering to help the tree establish its root system. Water deeply once a week, more often during hot, dry weather. Check the soil regularly to ensure it stays moist but not waterlogged. Once the tree is established (after 1-2 years), it requires less frequent watering and can handle short periods of drought.
  2. Fertilization: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) to promote healthy growth. Leyland Cypress trees don’t require much fertilization, but a light feeding in spring can help boost growth, especially for younger trees. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive growth that may weaken the tree.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: While generally hardy, Leyland Cypress can be susceptible to root rot in poorly draining soils, as well as pests like aphids and spider mites. Regularly inspect the tree for any signs of yellowing or browning, especially in the inner foliage. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and ensure good air circulation around the tree to prevent fungal issues.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  1. Pruning: Leyland Cypress trees require minimal pruning, but occasional trimming can help maintain their shape, especially when grown as a hedge. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. If using as a privacy screen, trim the sides and top lightly to maintain the desired height and shape, but avoid cutting back too deeply into old wood, as it may not regrow from there.
  2. Watering and Drought Tolerance: Once established, Leyland Cypress trees are fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during extended dry periods, especially in summer. Ensure that the soil has time to dry between waterings to prevent root rot.
  3. Cold Protection: Leyland Cypress is hardy in USDA zones 6-10 and can tolerate cold winters. In colder climates, a thick layer of mulch around the base of the tree in late fall helps protect the roots from freezing temperatures. The tree generally withstands cold well, but newly planted trees may need extra protection from strong winter winds, so consider windbreaks for young specimens.
  4. Pest and Disease Control: Good air circulation is key to avoiding fungal diseases such as canker, which can affect Leyland Cypress. Avoid planting too closely to structures or other trees to prevent overcrowding. Regularly inspect the tree for any browning or wilting branches, and remove affected areas promptly. If necessary, treat fungal infections with fungicides.

By following these guidelines, your Leyland Cypress will thrive, providing a fast-growing, elegant privacy screen or focal point in your landscape for many years to come!

Fast-growing privacy screen: Quickly forms a dense, tall barrier, ideal for privacy or windbreaks in landscapes.

Evergreen foliage: Soft, feathery green needles provide year-round color and coverage.

Low-maintenance: Drought-tolerant and adaptable to various soil types, requiring minimal care once established.

  • No Chemicals or Fertilizers Required: Once established, this tree thrives with little to no need for additional fertilizers. Its hardy nature makes it resistant to most pests and diseases.

Versatile Planting Options

Whether you’re looking to plant a single tree or create a long row for complete coverage, the Leyland Cypress can be planted in various configurations to suit your needs.

  • Single Row for Privacy: Plant your Leyland Cypress trees 8 feet apart for a single row privacy hedge that quickly grows into a dense wall of greenery.

Note about our Leyland Cypress Trees: During the autumn months, orders of Leyland Cypress trees may arrive with the central leader noticeably trimmed back. This is a common practice that encourages healthier, more robust growth in the spring. By cutting back the leader in the fall, the tree redirects its energy toward strengthening its root system and developing a fuller, more uniform shape. This ensures that when spring arrives, the tree can focus on producing vigorous new growth from multiple points, leading to a denser, more attractive structure. While it may seem unexpected, this technique helps your Leyland Cypress establish itself more effectively, setting the stage for long-term success in your landscape.
