  1. Light: Give your Hoya 'Krimson Princess' bright, indirect light to keep its pink and cream variegation vivid and to encourage blooms. It tolerates lower light, but the variegation fades and new growth turns greener. Keep it out of harsh direct sun, which can scorch the waxy leaves.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Plant in a chunky, well-draining potting mix, such as regular potting soil blended with orchid bark and perlite, in a pot with drainage holes. Hoyas like to be slightly snug in their pot, so choose a container only a little larger than the root ball.
  3. Placement: Keep it where temperatures stay between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Its vines can reach 6 to 8 feet long with support and spread 2 to 3 feet, so give it room to cascade from a shelf, trail from a hanging basket or climb a trellis or hoop.

  2. Humidity: Moderate humidity is ideal, but this Hoya tolerates normal indoor levels well. In very dry homes, especially in winter, mist occasionally or run a humidifier nearby. Good humidity helps new leaves unfurl cleanly and keeps the foliage glossy.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer during spring and summer to support healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter. Water the plant before feeding so the fertilizer does not burn the roots.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check leaf undersides, stems and flower spurs regularly for mealybugs, aphids and spider mites. Mealybugs look like small cottony tufts in leaf joints. Dab them off with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or treat the plant with insecticidal soap, repeating weekly until clear.

  1. Repotting: Repot only when the plant is clearly root bound, usually every two to three years, moving up one pot size in spring. Hoyas bloom best when their roots are a little crowded, so do not rush into a big container.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Prune to control size or encourage branching by snipping just above a leaf node, where new growth will emerge. Never cut off the small leafless stems or the flower spurs, because future blooms form there. Wipe dust from the waxy leaves with a soft damp cloth.
  3. Propagation: Take a stem cutting with at least two nodes, remove the lowest leaves and root it in water, moist sphagnum moss or a light potting mix in a warm spot with bright, indirect light. Keep the mix lightly moist until new growth appears.
