Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

  3. Placement: Keep it where temperatures stay between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 27 degrees Celsius). Avoid cold drafts, air conditioning vents, heaters and cold windowsills in winter, since sudden temperature swings cause leaf drop. Humid rooms like kitchens and bathrooms, or a terrarium, are excellent homes.

  1. Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, keeping the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Fittonia is famous for dramatically collapsing when it gets too dry, then perking back up within hours of a good drink. Try not to let it reach that point often, because repeated wilting stresses the plant.
  2. Humidity: Give it high humidity, like the rainforest floor of Peru where it grows wild. Mist regularly, run a humidifier nearby, or set the pot on a pebble tray. Crispy, curling leaf edges are the classic sign that the air is too dry, especially during winter heating season.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer. Diluting to half strength is a safe approach, since too much fertilizer can burn its delicate roots. Skip feeding in fall and winter when growth naturally slows.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the undersides of leaves and the stem joints every few weeks for mealybugs, aphids, fungus gnats and spider mites. Spider mites like dry air, so good humidity helps prevent them. Wipe off small infestations with a damp cloth or treat with insecticidal soap.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot every year or two in spring when roots fill the pot or the soil dries out very quickly. Move up only one pot size, about 1 to 2 inches wider, using fresh, organic-rich, well-draining mix. Water well after repotting and keep it out of bright light for a few days.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Pinch back stem tips regularly to keep the plant low, bushy and full. Many growers also pinch off the small flower spikes so the plant puts its energy into colorful foliage. Remove any yellow or dried leaves, and gently wipe dust from the leaves with a soft damp cloth.
