Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Fern 'Heart'

  1. Light: This Kangaroo Foot Fern does best in bright light, mostly indirect. Gentle direct light, such as early morning sun, is fine, but strong direct sun can scorch the glossy leaves. It is more forgiving of lower light than many ferns, so it works in shadier rooms.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Because it naturally grows on trees and rocks, it dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil. Use a well-draining fern or indoor potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. It also looks great in hanging baskets or mounted on driftwood.
  3. Placement: It typically grows about 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide indoors, perfect for windowsills, shelves, and tabletops. Keep it between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top inch of soil starts to dry, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water thoroughly and let the excess drain away, and check the soil more often in warm weather.
  2. Humidity: This fern thrives in high humidity, which makes it an excellent bathroom plant. In drier homes, use a humidifier or mist regularly. Low humidity can cause crispy brown leaf edges, especially in winter when indoor heating dries out the air.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed lightly, using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength about once a month in spring and summer. Skip feeding in fall and winter. Ferns are sensitive to salt buildup, so less is more.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the leaves and creeping rhizomes occasionally for mealybugs and scale. Remove them gently with a damp cloth or a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, and avoid harsh sprays on this fern's leaves.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot in spring when the creeping rhizomes crowd the pot, using a wide, shallow container and fresh, well-draining fern mix. Keep the rhizomes at the soil surface rather than burying them.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Trim damaged or brown leaves at the base with clean scissors. The sturdy, glossy leaves do not shed like lacy ferns, so a gentle wipe with a soft, damp cloth is all they need to stay clean.
  3. Propagation: Propagate by division. In spring, gently remove the plant from its pot and separate a section of the creeping rhizome with several leaves and roots attached. Pot each division in fresh, well-draining mix and keep it evenly moist while it settles in.

Additional Tips for Fern 'Heart'

  1. Pet Safety: This Kangaroo Foot Fern is considered non-toxic, so it is a safe, worry-free choice for homes with pets and children. Curious paws or little hands will not be harmed by contact with its glossy leaves, though it is always best to discourage chewing on any plant.
  2. Brown Leaves: Browning usually means the air is too dry, the soil dried out completely, or the plant is getting harsh direct sun. Raise humidity, water as soon as the top inch dries, and move it to softer light.
  3. Creative Displays: In its native Australian forests, this fern grows as an epiphyte on rocks and trees. That makes it a great candidate for hanging baskets or mounting on driftwood, as long as you keep it humid and evenly moist.

Description

Looking for a unique, eye-catching plant to brighten your home? Meet the Fern Heart houseplant, also known as the Kangaroo Foot Fern! Native to Australia, this striking plant is celebrated for its long, indented leaves with a distinct dark green hue and a glossy finish that adds an elegant yet modern touch to any space. Its sculptural foliage, resembling kangaroo footprints, makes it a conversation piece, whether displayed on a windowsill, shelf, or as part of a lush indoor garden.

What Sets the Fern Heart Houseplant Apart?

    1. Distinctive Foliage:
Unlike many other ferns that feature lacy, feather-like fronds, the Kangaroo Foot Fern boasts bold, glossy leaves with a uniquely indented texture and slightly fuzzy finish. Its leaves range from elongated and slender to broad and paddle-shaped, offering a variety of shapes and textures within a single plant. This diversity makes it stand out in any collection.

    2. Adaptable Nature:
The Fern Heart is exceptionally versatile, thriving in a wide range of indoor environments. Whether you have a brightly lit room or a cozy, shadier spot, this plant adjusts with ease. While it prefers indirect light, itโ€™s more forgiving of lower light conditions than many other fern varieties, making it an excellent choice for homes with varying lighting situations.

    3. Low-Maintenance Elegance:
Unlike some high-maintenance ferns that demand constant attention, the Kangaroo Foot Fern is surprisingly hardy. As long as itโ€™s kept in a humid environment with consistent moisture in its soil, it will flourish. Its ability to adapt to indoor living makes it an ideal option for both beginner plant parents and seasoned collectors.

    4. Australian Origins:
This plant is a native of the forests of Australia, where it grows as an epiphyte (a plant that grows on other plants or surfaces without being parasitic). This natural adaptability means it doesnโ€™t demand heavy soil or overwatering and thrives in indoor planters or mounted displays. Its origins also lend it a unique, exotic flair.
