Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

  1. Light: Indoors, a Lemon Cypress needs bright light, so place it near your sunniest window. Outdoors, it grows well in full to partial sun. Without enough light, the golden-green color dulls and the foliage can thin or brown.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Use a well-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage holes so the roots never sit in water. Because it grows slowly in a container, it does not outgrow its pot quickly.
  3. Placement: In a pot it typically grows 4 to 6 feet tall and 1.5 to 2.5 feet wide, keeping a neat, pyramid-like shape. It prefers temperatures between 50 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, so keep it away from heating vents and hot, dry corners.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Lemon Cypress does not like to dry out completely, which can quickly brown the foliage. Check it often, especially in warm weather or dry indoor heat.
  2. Humidity: It prefers moderate humidity. If your indoor air is dry, occasional misting helps keep the feathery foliage lush and green. Keep it away from heating vents, since dry indoor heat is a common cause of browning.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during spring and summer to encourage healthy growth and rich golden-green color. Skip feeding in fall and winter, when growth slows and the tree needs fewer nutrients.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the inner foliage occasionally for spider mites, which thrive in warm, dry indoor air and cause fine webbing and dull, speckled needles. Rinse the tree gently with water and treat mites with insecticidal soap if needed.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: A Lemon Cypress needs only minimal pruning. Trim lightly in spring or summer to maintain its conical shape and size, removing just the tips of the growth. Avoid cutting back into old, bare wood, because cypress generally does not regrow from leafless stems.
  2. Growing Outdoors: It can grow outdoors in mild climates, roughly USDA zones 7 to 10, in full to partial sun, where it can reach 15 to 20 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide. Protect it from hard frost and extreme heat. In colder areas, grow it in a pot you can bring indoors.
  3. Repotting: Because it grows slowly in a container and does not outgrow its pot quickly, repotting is only needed every few years. Move up one pot size in spring and use fresh, well-draining mix.
