Houseplant Information
Houseplant Information
Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.
How We Ship Your Plants
Ordering live plants online should feel exciting, not stressful! We only ship healthy, well-rooted trees and plants!
Beware- not all plant nurseries are the same! Others can cut corners to save money:
- We never ship bareroot plants
- We never cut roots to fit into a small box
- We always ship plants with healthy, developed roots so they establish faster at your home
- We focus on plant health first- not minimizing shipping costs
A strong root system is the foundation for long-term success, and we believe your plant should arrive ready to thrive- not struggling to recover from shortcuts.
How we Select Your Plants
Once you place your order, our nursery team selects your plant and inspects it to make sure it meets our quality standards. Every plant we ship is chosen for:
- Strong health and vibrant foliage
- A well-developed root system
- Correct sizing based on your order
We take pride in sending plants that are ready to succeed when they arrive at your home. We try our best to exceed your expectations!
Once your plants are selected, we give them a drink of water before their journey. Then, we wrap each plant's roots up in a plastic bag, so that they do not dry out during shipping.
Carefully Packed & Protected
Live plants can’t be packed like ordinary boxes, so we do it differently.
Your plant is carefully secured inside a strong shipping box to protect it while traveling. Packaging may include:
- Support materials for stability
- Protection around the pot and roots
- Reinforced boxing for added protection
For larger trees, we use oversize boxes designed to safely accommodate the size and structure of your plant during shipping.
Sometimes, you will receive multiple plants inside a box. This is helpful because it can evenly distribute the weight throughout the box, which helps keeps the plants safe and secure throughout delivery.
Fast & Reliable with FedEx
Most Nationwide Plants orders ship with FedEx. Over the years, we’ve found FedEx to be the best carrier for live plants, especially larger items, because:
- They deliver quickest across the country
- They are the most gentle with live plants
- Faster transit means less plant stress
Once your order ships, we will email you tracking information so you can follow your delivery from our nursery to your doorstep.
We ship Monday through Friday. Most orders ship the next business day, unless you request a custom shipping date.
Multiple Nursery Locations
We ship from multiple locations across the country, including both the East Coast and West Coast. This allows us to:
- Deliver faster in more regions
- Reduce time in transit for your plants
- Ship large items more efficiently

How We Measure Your Trees
We measure tree height from the soil line, not including the pot.
That means when you order a 5-6 ft. tree, you’re getting a tree that is 5-6 ft. tall above the soil, not “including the container.” This gives you a good idea of what to expect when your trees arrive, and what they will look like when they are in the ground.

After Your Plants Arrive
It’s completely normal for a plant to look slightly different after shipping. Your plant has been traveling in a box, so you may notice:
- Minor leaf drop
- Soil that shifted slightly in the pot
- Temporary drooping from being in a darker environment
In most cases, your plant perks up quickly once it’s unboxed, watered (if needed), and placed in the proper environment.
Unboxing Your Plants
When your plants arrive, we recommend:
-
Open carefully (avoid cutting into foliage)
-
Remove all packing materials
-
Check soil moisture (If the soil feels dry, give it a thorough watering)
-
Let the plant recover (Give it a little fresh air after shipping)
If you ever have questions or concerns, we’re happy to help!

Description
Croton ‘Gold Dust’: A Unique, Vibrant Houseplant with Year-Round Color
Croton ‘Gold Dust’ is the perfect plant when you want a splash of bold, bright color without the maintenance of a flowering plant. This tropical stunner stands out from other crotons because of its unique speckled foliage—deep green leaves are dusted with vibrant yellow spots, giving it a dazzling, starry effect. If you love having houseplants that look like living artwork, this one is a must-have.
What Makes Croton ‘Gold Dust’ Special?
Crotons are known for their striking foliage, but ‘Gold Dust’ takes a different approach than the more commonly seen crotons with fiery red, orange, and yellow patterns. Instead of dramatic veining or color-blocked leaves, ‘Gold Dust’ is more refined, with golden speckles that look almost as if they’ve been painted on. This makes it an excellent choice if you love crotons but want something a little different.
The shape of the leaves is also distinctive. Unlike the broader, lobed leaves of some croton varieties, ‘Gold Dust’ has more slender, oval-shaped leaves. This gives it a delicate, airy quality compared to its bolder, more rigid relatives.
It’s a fantastic way to introduce color into your home without needing to rely on flowers, which only bloom for a short time. With ‘Gold Dust,’ you get a consistently vibrant, eye-catching plant all year long.
Where to place the Croton 'Gold Dust' Houseplant
Many of our customers choose a sunny corner of their living space, where the golden speckles catch the light and bring warmth to the room. It also works beautifully as part of a group of plants, adding contrast against deep green foliage or soft, trailing vines.
This variety is compact enough for tabletops and shelves but can also grow tall enough to make a striking floor plant with time. Whether you want to create a lush, tropical vibe or just need a pop of color, ‘Gold Dust’ delivers.
If you have a bright kitchen or bathroom, this croton thrives in humidity, making it a great choice for those spaces. And since it’s a slow grower, you won’t have to worry about constant repotting.
Pet Owners, Take Note
Crotons are toxic to pets, so if you have curious cats or dogs that like to nibble, you’ll want to keep this one out of reach. Consider placing it on a high shelf, using a plant stand, or displaying it in a hanging planter.
Care Tips for a Thriving Croton ‘Gold Dust’
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It can tolerate some direct sun, which enhances the golden color, but too much harsh light can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Let the top inch dry out before watering again.
- Humidity: Higher humidity levels help this plant thrive. If your home is dry, consider misting the leaves or placing a small humidifier nearby.
- Temperature: Prefers warmth—keep it above 60°F (16°C) and away from drafts.
- Soil: Well-draining, peat-based potting mix works best.
- Fertilizer: A balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer will keep it growing strong.
Why Choose ‘Gold Dust’ Over Other Crotons?
- Easier to Style – The more subtle coloration pairs well with a variety of home décor styles, whereas some crotons can be overwhelming with their mix of red, orange, and green.
- Compact Growth Habit – Many crotons grow large and bushy, but ‘Gold Dust’ stays manageable for small spaces.
- Less Prone to Leaf Drop – Crotons can be dramatic about changes in environment, often dropping leaves when moved. ‘Gold Dust’ tends to be a little more forgiving than some of its relatives.
- Year-Round Interest – Since the beauty of this plant comes from its foliage, you get a vibrant display in every season.
A Great Gift for Plant Lovers
If you know someone who loves unique houseplants, Croton ‘Gold Dust’ makes a fantastic gift. It’s colorful, eye-catching, and different from the usual houseplant selections. Plus, it’s relatively easy to care for, making it a great option even for those who don’t have a green thumb.
