Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Cherokee Princess® Dogwood Tree:

  1. Location & Soil Preparation: The Cherokee Princess® dogwood prefers a spot with partial shade to full sun (ideally, morning sun with afternoon shade). It thrives in rich, well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5). If your soil is heavy clay or poor draining, amend it with organic matter such as compost to improve aeration and drainage.
  2. Planting Depth & Spacing: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower than the depth of the root ball. Dogwoods are shallow-rooted, so planting slightly higher than ground level (with the root flare just above the soil) helps prevent root rot. Space the tree 15-20 feet away from other trees or structures, allowing it room to grow and spread its canopy.
  3. Initial Watering: After planting, water the tree deeply to help the roots establish. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base (keeping it 2-3 inches away from the trunk) to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and prevent weeds. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged during the first year.

Care Instructions:

  1. Watering: For the first year, water the tree deeply once or twice a week, depending on rainfall. Once established, Cherokee Princess® dogwoods are somewhat drought-tolerant but perform best when kept evenly moist, especially during dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as dogwoods are sensitive to waterlogged soils.
  2. Fertilization: Feed your dogwood in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10). A layer of compost around the base can also help nourish the tree. Avoid fertilizing in late summer or fall, as this can encourage new growth that may not harden off before winter.
  3. Monitoring: Keep an eye out for pests such as borers or diseases like anthracnose, which can affect dogwoods. Maintaining healthy, well-drained soil and avoiding overhead watering can help prevent fungal diseases. Mulching helps conserve soil moisture and protect the shallow root system.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  1. Pruning: Prune your Cherokee Princess® dogwood in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve air circulation and reduce the risk of disease. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress the tree. Light pruning also helps maintain the tree’s naturally graceful form.
  2. Pest and Disease Control: The Cherokee Princess® dogwood is resistant to many pests and diseases but may occasionally face issues such as powdery mildew, leaf spot, or borers. To reduce disease risk, avoid wetting the foliage when watering and ensure the tree has good airflow. Treat pest infestations promptly with appropriate treatments such as insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
  3. Winter Protection: Cherokee Princess® dogwoods are hardy in USDA zones 5-9. In colder regions (zones 5-6), consider adding an extra layer of mulch around the base in late fall to protect the shallow roots from freezing temperatures. In particularly harsh winters, you may wrap the trunk in burlap to shield it from frost damage.
  4. Blooming and Pollination: This dogwood variety blooms in early spring with large, pure white flowers. Cherokee Princess® is not only stunning in appearance but is also an excellent pollinator, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects to your garden.

Growing Cherokee Princess® Dogwood in Containers:

While dogwoods prefer being planted in the ground due to their root spread, they can be grown in large containers for several years before outgrowing them. Here’s how to grow them successfully in containers:

  1. Container Size: Choose a large, sturdy container at least 24 inches wide and deep to give the tree’s roots ample space. Ensure the container has drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil.
  2. Potting Mix: Use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix, such as one formulated for trees and shrubs, or mix garden soil with peat and perlite for good drainage and moisture retention.
  3. Watering and Fertilizing: Water container-grown dogwoods regularly, as containers dry out faster than garden soil. Be sure to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Fertilize with a slow-release formula in spring to support growth.
  4. Repotting: Every 2-3 years, repot the tree into a larger container or refresh the soil mix if roots are becoming crowded. When the tree outgrows container life, it’s best to transplant it into the ground.

Get Superior Cherokee Princess® Dogwood Trees, Grown by Experts

Stronger Roots for Faster Growth: Some nurseries ship “bare root” trees to cut costs, but this can lead to transplant shock and slow establishment. We send your Cherokee Princess® Dogwood Tree in a soil-filled container, ensuring a well-developed root system that promotes vigorous growth and earlier blooms.

Healthy Roots, Thriving Trees: Many growers use undersized pots, creating root-bound trees that struggle to absorb water and nutrients. Our Cherokee Princess® Dogwood Trees are grown in spacious containers, allowing their roots to expand properly so they arrive strong, healthy, and ready to flourish.

True-to-Size Guarantee: Some nurseries measure trees including the pot and roots, meaning their “5-6 ft.” tree may be significantly shorter when planted. We measure from the soil line up, ensuring your Cherokee Princess® Dogwood Treemeets the advertised height upon arrival.

Authentic Cherokee Princess® Variety: Some dogwoods grown from seed may not produce the signature early white blooms you expect. Our Cherokee Princess® Dogwood Trees are expertly propagated to ensure you receive the true variety, known for its pure white flowers, strong disease resistance, and reliable spring beauty.
