Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for 8-Inch Chrysanthemums:

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Chrysanthemums, also known as mums, thrive in full sun. Choose a spot where they will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Ensure the location has well-draining soil, as mums don’t tolerate soggy conditions. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, amend it with compost or organic matter to improve drainage.
  2. Planting Depth & Spacing: Dig a hole twice as wide as the 8-inch pot the mum came in, but only as deep as the root ball. Carefully remove the mum from its container, gently loosening the roots if they are root-bound. Place the mum in the hole, with the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Space individual plants 18-24 inches apart to allow for airflow and room to grow, which helps prevent fungal issues.
  3. Initial Watering: After planting, water thoroughly to help the roots settle. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, keep the soil cool, and reduce weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the stems to avoid rot.

Care Instructions:

  1. Watering: Mums prefer consistently moist soil but not soggy. Water deeply once a week, making sure the top 1-2 inches of soil dries out between waterings. Increase watering frequency during hot, dry weather, and avoid wetting the foliage, as this can encourage fungal diseases.
  2. Fertilization: Fertilize your chrysanthemums in early spring, and again in early summer, with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms. Avoid fertilizing in late summer or fall, as this can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
  3. Monitoring: Keep an eye on the plant for signs of pests, such as aphids or spider mites, and treat them with insecticidal soap if needed. Also, ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew or other fungal problems.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  1. Pinching: To encourage bushier growth and more blooms, pinch back the growing tips in late spring or early summer. Pinching means removing the top 1-2 inches of each stem, which encourages the plant to produce more lateral branches. Stop pinching by mid-July to allow the plant time to form flower buds for fall blooming.
  2. Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage new blooms and keep the plant looking tidy. Deadheading also helps prevent the plant from going to seed, which can reduce flower production.
  3. Pruning: After the first frost kills back the foliage, cut the stems down to 2-3 inches above ground level. You can leave the foliage in place until spring to provide winter protection for the roots. In the spring, trim back any dead or damaged stems before new growth begins.
  4. Pest and Disease Control: Mums are generally hardy, but they can sometimes be affected by pests like aphids, spider mites, or diseases such as powdery mildew. Water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry and improve airflow to reduce disease risks. Treat pest infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  5. Winter Protection: In colder climates (zones 5-7), mums may need winter protection. After the first hard frost, apply a thick layer of mulch (3-4 inches) around the base of the plant to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. In areas with harsh winters, consider covering the plant with straw or burlap for added insulation.

Growing Chrysanthemums in Containers:

If you want to grow your 8-inch chrysanthemums in containers, here’s how to do it successfully:

  1. Choosing a Container: Use a container that’s at least 12 inches wide and has good drainage holes. Mums have shallow roots, so make sure the pot allows for proper water drainage.
  2. Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably one designed for flowering plants, or mix in perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage.
  3. Watering and Fertilization: Container-grown mums dry out more quickly than those in the ground, so check soil moisture often, especially during hot weather. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer to encourage blooming.
  4. Winter Care for Containers: In colder regions, you can overwinter container-grown mums by moving them to a sheltered area, such as a garage, or insulating the pot with burlap. Alternatively, bring the pots indoors during the winter months and store them in a cool, dark place.

By following these steps, your 8-inch chrysanthemums will reward you with vibrant, long-lasting blooms throughout the fall season.

Planting and Care Tips

Chrysanthemums thrive in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9 and prefer full sun to partial shade for the best blooms. For optimal growth, plant them in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight. When planting in garden beds or containers, space mums about 18-24 inches apart to allow for good airflow and spread. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, and water regularly to ensure healthy growth.

To prolong blooming, pinch back the spent flowers and deadhead regularly. If planting your 8-inch Chrysanthemums in containers, choose pots with good drainage and water frequently, as pots can dry out faster than garden soil. For gardeners in cooler climates, consider planting these mums in the ground as perennials for a beautiful display that returns each year.
