Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Parlor Palm

  1. Light: A Parlor Palm grows in direct or indirect light and is known for tolerating lower light, making it perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, and offices. Bright, filtered light gives the fullest growth. Avoid harsh, hot afternoon sun through a window, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Keep your palm in a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix. Parlor Palms like being slightly root-bound, so a snug pot is fine. If you use a decorative cachepot, empty any water that collects at the bottom after watering.
  3. Placement: Set it on a tabletop, plant stand, or the floor where its arching fronds have room. Parlor Palm is a slow grower that typically reaches 12 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide as a houseplant, so it stays a manageable size for years. Keep it away from heating vents and cold drafts.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry, which is usually every one to two weeks. It prefers evenly moist but never soggy soil. Water less often in winter when growth slows, and always empty any water that collects in the saucer.
  2. Humidity: A Parlor Palm appreciates moderate humidity but adapts well to average home conditions. If your air is very dry in winter, grouping plants together, using a pebble tray, or running a humidifier nearby helps prevent crispy frond tips.
  3. Fertilizing: Fertilize lightly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength about once a month. Skip feeding in fall and winter. Too much fertilizer causes brown tips, so it is better to under-feed than over-feed.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the undersides of fronds occasionally for spider mites, which cause fine webbing and speckled leaves, especially in dry air. Mealybugs and scale can also appear. Rinse the plant in the shower or wipe fronds with insecticidal soap at the first sign of pests.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot every two to three years, or when roots circle the pot or grow out of the drainage holes. Spring is the best time. Move up only one pot size and use a well-draining potting mix.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Snip off fully brown or yellow fronds at the base with clean scissors, and trim brown tips for a neat look. Palms grow from the center, so never cut the top of the stems. Rinse or wipe dusty fronds every month or two so they can absorb light.

Additional Tips for Parlor Palm

  1. Pet Safety: The Parlor Palm is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a worry-free choice for homes with pets. It is one of the few popular palms considered pet-safe. Even so, chewing any plant can cause mild stomach upset, so discourage pets from snacking on the fronds.
  2. Troubleshooting: Brown tips usually come from dry air, underwatering, or salt buildup from tap water and fertilizer, so water consistently and flush the soil with plain water now and then. Yellow leaves most often mean overwatering or poor drainage. Drooping fronds with dry soil mean it is thirsty. An occasional yellow lower frond is normal aging.
