Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Bird's Nest 'Nidus' Fern

  1. Light: Bright, indirect light gives the best growth and color, though your Bird's Nest Fern tolerates low light well. Keep it out of strong direct afternoon sun, which can bleach or scorch the glossy fronds and cause brown patches.
  2. Potting and Drainage: This fern has a relatively small root system and does well in a snug pot. Use a loose, well-draining mix that holds some moisture, such as potting soil with bark or perlite, and make sure the pot has drainage holes.
  3. Placement: The wide, wavy fronds fan out 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide at maturity, so give the plant room to spread. Humid rooms with good light, like bathrooms, kitchens, and sunrooms, are a natural fit. Smaller plants suit shelves and side tables.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top of the soil is slightly dry, keeping it evenly moist but never soggy. Water around the base of the plant rather than into the central rosette, since water sitting in the center can cause rot. Reduce watering in winter.
  2. Humidity: This fern loves humidity. In dry homes, use a humidifier or pebble tray to prevent brown, crispy frond edges. Grouping it with other plants also helps raise moisture around the leaves.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed lightly, once a month in spring and summer, with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength, applied to the soil rather than the center of the plant. Skip feeding in fall and winter. Too much fertilizer can cause misshapen or brown fronds.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the fronds and the base now and then for scale and mealybugs, which appear as small bumps or cottony spots. Remove them gently with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh leaf-shine products or strong sprays, as the fronds can be sensitive.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot only when the fern becomes root-bound, usually every two to three years in spring. Move up just one pot size and refresh the loose, bark- or perlite-rich mix so the roots stay airy.
  2. Pruning and Cleaning Leaves: Remove any brown or damaged fronds at the base with clean scissors. Never cut or touch the fuzzy center, where new fronds unfurl. Wipe dust from the glossy fronds with a soft, damp cloth, supporting each frond as you go.
  3. Understanding the Rosette: 'Nidus' comes from the Latin word for nest, which describes the plant's rosette shape. New fronds unfurl from that fuzzy center, so protect it from damage and standing water to keep the plant growing strongly.

Additional Tips for Bird's Nest 'Nidus' Fern

  1. Pet Safety: The Bird's Nest Fern is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great pet-friendly choice. Its sturdy fronds can still tempt curious pets, and chewing may cause mild stomach upset, so placing it on a shelf or plant stand helps protect both plant and pet.
  2. Brown Fronds: Brown fronds usually come from low humidity, underwatering, or too much direct sun. Brown, mushy centers point to overwatering or water sitting in the rosette. Adjust watering, raise humidity, and move the plant away from harsh light.
  3. Air Quality: The Bird's Nest Fern is known to help improve indoor air quality while adding lush tropical color, so it is both functional and decorative in a bedroom, office, or bathroom.

The Bird's Nest 'Nidus' Fern thrives Indoors.
