Planting Instructions for Fruit Snacks® Blushing Pearl™ Columnar Peach Tree

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Plant Blushing Pearl in full sun in USDA zones 6 through 9 for the best flowering, fruit and flavor. Its narrow, upright habit suits side yards, narrow beds, edible hedges and patios. In areas with late spring frosts, a sheltered spot helps protect early blooms.
  2. Soil Preparation: Choose fertile, well-drained soil. Loosen a wide area and mix in compost, and avoid low spots where water or cold air settles.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, and set the tree so the graft union stays above the soil line. It is listed at about 15 feet tall and 4 feet wide, growing mostly upward. For an edible hedge, space trees about 3 to 4 feet apart.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply after planting and spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch in a wide ring, keeping it a few inches from the trunk.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit development. Water deeply about once a week in dry weather rather than giving light, frequent sprinkles.
  2. Fertilizing: Feed in early spring with a fruit tree fertilizer as buds break. Avoid heavy late-season feeding that delays hardening off before winter.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Peach leaf curl is one of the most common problems, causing puckered, reddish leaves in spring. A dormant-season copper spray in late fall or late winter helps prevent it. Good sun, airflow and cleanup of fallen fruit reduce disease and pests.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Columnar trees need little structural pruning. In late winter, remove dead or crossing branches and shorten any side shoots that spoil the narrow form. Thin young fruit in spring so remaining peaches size up.
  2. Winter Care: Blushing Pearl has a lower chill hour requirement than many peaches but still needs some winter cold, so it is not suited to frost-free climates. Protect open blossoms with frost cloth if a late frost is forecast.
  3. Growing in Containers: It grows well in a large patio container with drainage holes and fertile, well-draining mix. Keep the soil evenly moist during flowering and fruiting.
