Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Bloomerang Lilac Bush:

  1. Location & Soil Preparation: Bloomerang lilacs thrive in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0). Choose a spot with full sun, which means at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sun encourages better blooms and helps prevent disease. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, amend it with compost or organic matter to improve drainage.
  2. Planting Depth & Spacing: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Place the lilac bush in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Space multiple plants about 4-6 feet apart, allowing enough room for airflow and future growth.
  3. Initial Watering: After planting, water thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant will help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few inches away from the stem to avoid rot.

Care Instructions:

  1. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help the roots establish. Bloomerang lilacs prefer moist but well-drained soil. Once established, they are moderately drought-tolerant but perform best with consistent watering, especially during dry periods. Water deeply but avoid waterlogging the soil.
  2. Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like 10-10-10) in early spring to encourage healthy growth and blooms. Alternatively, you can add compost around the base of the plant in spring. Avoid fertilizing too late in the season, as this can stimulate tender growth that may not survive winter.
  3. Monitoring: Lilacs are generally disease-resistant but can be prone to powdery mildew in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation by planting with adequate spacing and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care:

  1. Pruning: Prune your Bloomerang lilac immediately after its spring bloom to promote additional blooms later in the season (Bloomerang lilacs are reblooming, flowering in both spring and late summer to fall). Remove spent flowers to encourage reblooming and trim any dead or damaged branches. Light pruning can also help maintain the desired size and shape.
  2. Reblooming: Bloomerang lilacs are known for their ability to bloom not just in spring, but again in late summer to fall. After the first bloom, deadhead spent flowers to encourage the next flush of blooms. With proper care and fertilization, the plant should produce blooms throughout the growing season.
  3. Pest and Disease Control: Lilacs are relatively pest-free but may occasionally suffer from issues such as aphids, leaf miners, or scale. If pests appear, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Powdery mildew can be an issue in areas with poor air circulation, so prune the bush regularly to maintain airflow.
  4. Winter Care: Bloomerang lilacs are hardy in USDA zones 3-7 and typically don’t require special winter protection in these areas. In colder regions, adding a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around the base in late fall will help insulate the roots from freezing temperatures.

Growing Bloomerang Lilacs in Containers:

If you'd like to grow your Bloomerang lilac in a container, follow these guidelines:

  1. Choosing a Container: Use a large container (at least 18-24 inches wide) with drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil. Make sure the pot is deep enough to accommodate the roots and provides room for future growth.
  2. Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a blend designed for trees and shrubs, or a mix of standard potting soil with added perlite or sand for drainage.
  3. Watering and Fertilization: Lilacs in containers may dry out faster than those planted in the ground, so monitor soil moisture regularly. Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. Fertilize with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring and mid-summer to support reblooming.
  4. Winter Care for Containers: In colder climates, move the container to a sheltered area, such as a garage, or wrap the pot with insulating material to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. You can also bury the pot in the ground for winter to provide extra protection.

With proper care, your Bloomerang lilac bush will provide beautiful, fragrant blooms throughout the growing season.

Get Superior Bloomerang Lilac Bushes, Grown by Experts

Stronger Roots for Faster Growth: Some nurseries ship “bare root” lilacs to cut costs, but this can lead to transplant shock and weak establishment. We send your Bloomerang Lilac Bush in a soil-filled container, ensuring a well-developed root system that supports vigorous growth and a long-lasting bloom cycle.

Healthy Roots, Thriving Bushes: Many growers use small pots, creating root-bound plants that struggle to absorb water and nutrients. Our Bloomerang Lilac Bushes are grown in spacious containers, allowing their roots to expand properly so they arrive strong, healthy, and ready to thrive.

True-to-Size Guarantee: Some nurseries measure plants including the pot and roots, meaning their “2-3 ft.” bush may be significantly shorter when planted. We measure from the soil line up, ensuring your Bloomerang Lilac Bush meets the advertised height upon arrival.

Authentic Reblooming Variety: Unlike traditional lilacs that bloom only once per year, our Bloomerang Lilac Bushes are true reblooming hybrids, expertly propagated to ensure multiple waves of fragrant purple flowers from spring through fall.

Its compact form makes it perfect for smaller yards, while its continuous blooming ensures a long season of interest. Plant it in groups for a stunning mass of color or use it as a single specimen for an eye-catching feature.

Easy to Care For and Low Maintenance

The Bloomerang Lilac Bush is not only beautiful but also easy to grow and care for. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, though it adapts to a variety of soil types. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal care, making it an excellent choice for homeowners who want a low-maintenance plant that delivers big on beauty. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage additional reblooming, but the shrub will continue to bloom even without extra attention.

Cold Hardy and Tough

Its durable nature makes it a great choice for northern climates, where it will return year after year with fresh, fragrant flowers. Despite its tough constitution, the Bloomerang Lilac offers the elegance and charm of classic lilacs, ensuring your garden looks vibrant and colorful even in challenging weather conditions.
