Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

  2. Potting and Drainage: Plant it in a well-draining succulent or cactus mix, and add perlite or orchid bark to improve aeration around the roots. Always use a pot with drainage holes so water never collects at the bottom. A slightly snug pot helps encourage flowering.
  3. Placement: Keep it between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 29 degrees Celsius), away from cold drafts and extreme heat. In a pot it typically measures 12 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, with vines that lengthen over time, so a hanging basket, high shelf or small trellis shows off its twisted foliage.

  1. Watering: Water only after the soil dries out completely, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Its thick, succulent leaves store water, so overwatering is the biggest risk and quickly causes root rot. Water even less often in winter when growth slows.
  2. Humidity: This Hoya adapts well to normal indoor humidity. Occasional misting or a nearby humidifier may help encourage blooming, especially in dry winter air, but it is not required for healthy growth.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer. No fertilizer is needed in fall and winter. Regular feeding in the growing season supports healthy vines and helps the plant build energy for blooms.
  4. Pest Monitoring: The tightly curled leaves give pests good hiding spots, so check inside the folds and along the stems every few weeks. Mealybugs and aphids are the most common. Dab mealybugs with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, or treat with insecticidal soap.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot only when roots have clearly filled the pot, moving up a single size in spring and using fresh, gritty succulent mix. Hoyas bloom better when slightly root bound, so there is no need to repot often.
  2. Pruning: Prune sparingly, only to maintain the plant's shape. Do not cut off the long, spindly stems or the short flower spurs, called peduncles, because that is where new flowers grow, and Hoyas rebloom from the same spurs year after year.
  3. Propagation: Cut a healthy piece of vine with at least one or two nodes and let it dry for a day. Root it in water, moist perlite or a light succulent mix, and keep it warm. Roots usually form within several weeks.
