Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Broadmoor Juniper

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Plant Broadmoor Juniper in full to partial sun in USDA zones 3 through 7. Full sun gives the densest foliage; in partial shade it spreads more slowly. It is best suited to northern and mid-range climates rather than the hot, humid Deep South, and it has excellent wind resistance.
  2. Soil Preparation: Broadmoor handles many soil types, including poor soils, as long as the area drains well. Avoid spots where water stays around the roots.
  3. Planting: Dig each hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, setting plants level with the ground. It grows about 2 to 3 feet tall and spreads 6 to 10 feet wide. Space plants 5 to 6 feet apart for groundcover, or a bit closer for quicker fill on a slope.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply right after planting to settle the soil. Spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch around and between plants, keeping it a few inches away from the stems, to hold moisture and keep weeds down while the plants fill in.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water regularly while it becomes established, and it will handle drier conditions once the roots settle in. Water at the base of the plant, ideally in the morning, so the foliage stays dry, and check the soil a few inches down before watering again.
  2. Fertilizing: Junipers need little fertilizer. If growth is weak, apply a light slow-release fertilizer for evergreens in early spring. Rich soil and heavy feeding are not needed and can cause soft, floppy growth.
  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Watch for tip blight, which browns branch tips in wet springs, and prune out affected shoots in dry weather. Check for bagworms in early summer and spider mites during hot, dry spells, which cause dull, speckled foliage. Good air flow and dry foliage prevent most problems.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: Regular pruning is usually not needed. If branches reach onto paths, trim them back to a side shoot. Avoid cutting into old, bare wood, since junipers rarely regrow from it.
  2. Winter Care: Broadmoor is very cold hardy and keeps its bright green foliage all winter. Its low profile helps it shrug off drying winter winds.

Additional Tips for Growing Broadmoor Juniper

  1. Large Spaces: Its wide spread makes it ideal for covering slopes, big planting beds and hillsides without mowing. Its branches fill spaces between shrubs, rocks and other landscape features, connecting larger beds into one evergreen sweep.
  2. Windy Sites: Use it in open yards and coastal gardens with steady wind. Due to state plant regulations, it cannot ship to California.

Description

Broadmoor Juniper: Tough Evergreen Groundcover for Slopes, Borders, and Large Spaces

Cover open areas with dependable year-round color using the Broadmoor Juniper. This low-growing evergreen spreads wide with dense, graceful branches that help fill bare spaces and add lasting texture to the landscape.

Its bright green foliage stays attractive through every season, making Broadmoor Juniper a strong choice for slopes, rock gardens, borders, large planting beds, and mass plantings. Once established, it is tough, easy to care for, and built to handle difficult growing conditions.

Why You'll Love the Broadmoor Juniper

Year-Round Evergreen Color: Bright green foliage keeps your landscape looking full and fresh in every season.

Wide-Spreading Groundcover: Dense branches spread across the soil to help cover large open areas.

Great for Slopes: Its spreading growth can help cover bare soil and reduce erosion on hillsides and banks.

Excellent Wind Resistance: Broadmoor Juniper handles exposed, windy locations well and can be useful in coastal landscapes.

Tough in Poor Soil: This durable evergreen can grow in lower-quality soils where many other plants may struggle.

Low Maintenance: Once established, Broadmoor Juniper needs very little pruning or extra care.

Dependable Evergreen Coverage All Year

The biggest benefit of Broadmoor Juniper is its dense, spreading growth. It helps fill open soil with green foliage and creates a neat, finished look without needing to be mowed.

Because it is evergreen, the foliage stays in place through winter and keeps the landscape from looking bare.

A Great Groundcover for Large Spaces

Broadmoor Juniper works especially well in areas where you need to cover a lot of ground. Its wide-spreading branches help connect larger planting beds and fill spaces between shrubs, rocks, and other landscape features.

Use several plants together to create a broad area of low-maintenance evergreen coverage.

Where to Plant Broadmoor Juniper

Slopes and Hillsides: Plant it on banks to help cover exposed soil and reduce erosion.

Rock Gardens: Its bright green foliage looks natural around stone, gravel, and boulders.

Garden Beds: Use it to fill open spaces and add year-round texture around taller shrubs and trees.

Borders: Plant it along the edge of large beds for low, spreading evergreen color.

Mass Plantings: Use several plants together for wide coverage in larger landscapes.

Outdoor Containers: Grow it in a large planter and let the branches spill over the sides for a soft, flowing look.

Broadmoor Juniper Sun and Soil Needs

Sunlight: Plant Broadmoor Juniper in full sun for the best growth and dense foliage.

Soil: This juniper can handle many soil types, including poor soils, as long as the area drains well.

Watering: Water regularly while the plant is becoming established. Once the roots are settled in, Broadmoor Juniper becomes easier to care for and can handle drier conditions.

Great for Windy and Coastal Landscapes

Broadmoor Juniper is a strong choice for exposed locations. Its durable growth helps it handle steady wind better than many softer landscape plants.

This makes it useful around open yards, coastal gardens, patios, and other areas that receive frequent wind.

Helpful for Slopes and Erosion Control

The dense, spreading branches help cover bare soil and create a layer of plant growth across slopes and banks.

This can be useful in areas where rain or wind may move loose soil, and it also gives difficult hillsides a greener, more finished look.

Easy Care With Very Little Maintenance

Broadmoor Juniper naturally grows into a wide, spreading shape, so regular pruning is usually not needed. Give it plenty of sun, good drainage, and regular water while it becomes established.

After that, it can provide dependable evergreen coverage with very little attention.

A Tough Evergreen for Difficult Landscape Areas

If you need a groundcover with year-round green foliage, strong wind resistance, easy-care growth, and dependable coverage, Broadmoor Juniper is an excellent choice.

Plant Broadmoor Juniper for lasting color, easy ground coverage, and a tough evergreen that performs well in challenging landscape spaces.
