Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

  1. Choosing the Right Location: Outdoors, plant Bauer's Cordyline in USDA zones 9 to 11 in a spot with partial shade to bright light. Partial shade helps prevent leaf scorch in hot climates, while brighter light brings out the deepest red tones. Indoors, give it bright, indirect light near a sunny window, since low light can dull its color over time.
  2. Soil Preparation: Provide well-drained soil. Bauer's Cordyline adapts to sandy or loamy garden soils and performs well in raised beds or large pots where drainage is ideal. Avoid heavy soil that stays wet, since soggy roots can lead to rot.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, and set the plant at the same level it grew in its pot. It grows to about 5 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, so space plants roughly 3 to 5 feet apart to give each crown room.
  4. Mulching and First Watering: Water deeply after planting to settle the soil. Spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches from the trunk, to hold moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly while the plant is young.

  3. Pest and Disease Monitoring: Check the leaves occasionally, especially on indoor plants, for mealybugs, scale, or spider mites, and wipe them off or treat with insecticidal soap. Brown lower leaves are usually just older leaves aging naturally; widespread browning points to soggy soil, very dry air, or cold drafts.

  1. Pruning: Trim off older, browning lower leaves about once a year to keep the trunk clean and the crown tidy. Use clean, sharp pruners and cut close to the stem. Its slow, upright growth makes it easy to shape over the years.
  2. Winter Care: In zones colder than 9, move Bauer's Cordyline indoors before temperatures drop below freezing. Place it in a bright spot away from heating vents, water a bit less than in summer, and skip fertilizing until spring. Move it back outside once all danger of frost has passed.
