Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Caring for Your Calathea ‘White Star’

Calatheas have a reputation for being a bit dramatic, and ‘White Star’ is no exception. But if you understand its needs, it will reward you with lush, vibrant growth.

Light

Bright, indirect light is best. Too much direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves, while too little light can cause the vibrant variegation to fade. A north or east-facing window is ideal, or you can place it a few feet away from a bright west or south-facing window with sheer curtains.

Watering

Consistently moist soil is key. ‘White Star’ does not like to dry out completely, but it also doesn’t tolerate sitting in water. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, using filtered or distilled water if possible. Tap water with high chlorine or fluoride levels can cause browning edges on the leaves.

Humidity

High humidity (above 50%) is essential for this plant to thrive. If your home is on the dry side, consider using a humidifier, grouping it with other plants, or placing a pebble tray with water nearby. Without enough humidity, the leaf edges may crisp and brown.

Temperature

Keep temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid placing it near drafts, heaters, or air conditioning vents, as sudden temperature changes can stress the plant.

Soil

A well-draining, peat-based potting mix is best. You can mix regular potting soil with orchid bark and perlite to improve aeration and drainage.

Fertilizing

During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows down.

Pruning & Maintenance

Remove any yellow or brown leaves to keep the plant looking its best.

Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to remove dust and help with photosynthesis.

If leaves start curling or drooping, check for underwatering, low humidity, or excessive light exposure.

The Calathea 'White Star' thrives Indoors.

Description

Goeppertia Majestica Calathea 'White Star': The Striking Statement Plant Your Collection Needs

Calathea ‘White Star’ is a stunning variety that commands attention with its elegant white-striped leaves and graceful presence. If you love houseplants that feel almost too beautiful to be real, this one belongs in your home. The bold contrast of deep green and crisp white, with subtle hints of pink, sets it apart from other Calatheas. Unlike some varieties that have darker, more dramatic foliage, ‘White Star’ has a softer, luminous quality that brightens any space.

But don’t let its beauty fool you—this plant isn’t just about looks. It’s also part of the Marantaceae family, known for their ability to purify the air and their fascinating leaf movements. If you’ve ever wanted a plant with personality, this one responds to light changes, moving its leaves slightly throughout the day, almost as if it has a rhythm of its own.

What Makes Calathea ‘White Star’ Different?

There are plenty of Calatheas out there, but ‘White Star’ stands out in a few key ways:

  1. Striking Variegation – Many Calatheas have striped or patterned leaves, but ‘White Star’ takes it to another level. The creamy white striping is more pronounced and covers a larger portion of the leaf than in similar varieties like Calathea ornata (Pinstripe Plant).

  2. Delicate Pink Undertones – Young leaves often emerge with a soft pink blush, adding an extra layer of charm. As the leaves mature, this fades into the signature white and green striping.

  3. Taller Growth Habit – While some Calatheas stay compact, ‘White Star’ can grow taller than many other varieties, reaching up to 3 feet. This makes it a great choice for filling in empty corners or creating a focal point in a room.

  4. Sensitive to Light, But Adaptable – While it prefers bright, indirect light, ‘White Star’ is more tolerant of lower light than some of its fussier Calathea relatives. If you’ve struggled with Calatheas before, this one might be a better fit.

  5. Pet-Friendly – If you have cats or dogs, you’ll be happy to know this plant is non-toxic. Unlike many tropical houseplants, you won’t have to worry about curious pets nibbling on the leaves.

Styling Ideas for Your Space

Calathea ‘White Star’ is a statement plant that can work in several areas of your home:

  • As a Dining Room Centerpiece – Place it in an elegant pot on a table or sideboard where its striking foliage can be admired.
  • In a Bedroom Retreat – The gentle leaf movement and soft hues create a calming, spa-like atmosphere.
  • On a Plant Shelf – Pair it with other Calatheas or Marantas for a collection of mesmerizing foliage.
  • In a Bathroom with Good Light – The natural humidity from showers can help keep it thriving.

Is Calathea ‘White Star’ Right for You?

The Calathea ‘White Star’ has a striking look with its elegant, striped white-and-green leaves and pink undertones, making it a perfect match for countless aesthetics. Here are the top three it vibes with:

  1. Minimalist Modern – Its sleek, patterned foliage adds an organic yet structured element to clean, modern interiors with neutral tones, smooth surfaces, and curated simplicity. The contrast of its leaves against white, gray, or black spaces makes it pop without overwhelming the aesthetic.

  2. Bohemian Jungle – This plant thrives in lush, plant-filled spaces with layered greenery, woven textures, and earthy tones. It complements rattan furniture, macramé hangings, and warm wood elements, making it a staple in a cozy, nature-inspired home.

  3. Scandinavian Chic – With its soft pastel pink hues and crisp lines, the ‘White Star’ aligns beautifully with the Scandinavian aesthetic, which favors light woods, cozy textiles, and a mix of muted and natural colors. It adds a fresh yet subtle vibrancy to airy, bright interiors.

Whether you’re an experienced plant parent or looking to challenge yourself with something more special, Calathea ‘White Star’ is a rewarding choice that brings movement, texture, and beauty into your space.

Interesting History

Calathea majestica ‘White Star’ was originally classified under the Calathea genus, but due to botanical reclassification, it is now correctly placed under the Goeppertia genus. So, its updated botanical name is: Goeppertia majestica ‘White Star’

This change happened because many plants that were previously in the Calathea genus were moved to Goeppertia based on genetic studies. While the name change might not be widely recognized by plant enthusiasts and nurseries yet, it’s scientifically accurate. That said, you’ll still see it labeled as Calathea ‘White Star’ in many stores and plant communities, so both names are often used interchangeably.
