Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Planting Instructions for Indoor ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

  1. Choosing a Pot: Select a pot with good drainage holes, as ZZ plants are highly susceptible to root rot if left sitting in water. A ceramic or plastic pot works well, but make sure it’s slightly larger than the plant's root ball to allow room for growth.
  2. Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent blend. If using regular potting soil, add perlite or sand to improve drainage. The goal is to create a soil mix that dries out quickly to prevent waterlogged roots.
  3. Planting Depth: Place the ZZ plant in the pot so that the top of the root ball sits just slightly above the soil line. This ensures proper drainage and keeps the plant from sitting too deeply in the pot. Backfill around the plant with soil, firming it gently, but avoid packing it too tightly to maintain good airflow around the roots.
  4. Watering: After planting, water lightly, allowing excess water to drain out of the bottom. ZZ plants prefer a dry environment, so let the soil dry out between waterings. Water only when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry to the touch.

Care Instructions for Indoor ZZ Plant

  1. Watering Routine: ZZ plants store water in their thick rhizomes, making them highly drought-tolerant. Water sparingly—every 2-3 weeks is typically enough, depending on the humidity and light levels in your home. Make sure to let any excess water drain away completely to avoid root rot.
  2. Light Requirements: ZZ plants are known for their ability to tolerate low light, making them perfect for indoor spaces. However, they will thrive and grow faster in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch their leaves, but aim for filtered light near a window for optimal growth.
  3. Fertilization: ZZ plants are slow growers and do not need much fertilizer. Feed them with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength once every 2-3 months during spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows.
  4. Humidity: ZZ plants are not fussy about humidity, but average indoor humidity levels are ideal. If your home is very dry, consider occasional misting, though it is generally not necessary.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Pruning: ZZ plants require minimal pruning. Remove any yellow or brown leaves by cutting them off at the base using clean scissors. This keeps the plant looking healthy and tidy. If the plant grows too tall or leggy, you can prune back stems to encourage fuller growth.
  2. Dusting: Indoor ZZ plants can accumulate dust on their leaves, which can block light and reduce photosynthesis. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep them clean and shiny.
  3. Pest Control: ZZ plants are typically pest-resistant, but in rare cases, you might encounter spider mites or mealybugs. If this happens, wipe the affected areas with a mixture of water and mild dish soap, or use an insecticidal soap if needed.
  4. Repotting: ZZ plants grow slowly, so they don’t need frequent repotting. Typically, repotting every 2-3 years is sufficient, and it's best to do so in spring or early summer. When repotting, choose a pot that is one size larger than the current one to give the roots space to grow.

ZZ Plant

The Ultimate Low-Maintenance Plant for Effortless Elegance

Looking for a plant that combines beauty with almost no care requirements? Meet the ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), the perfect addition to any home, office, or outdoor space. With its glossy, dark green leaves and architectural form, the ZZ Plant brings a touch of sophistication and modern style, all while being one of the easiest plants to maintain.

Striking Appearance

The ZZ Plant is known for its thick, waxy leaves that grow along arching stems, creating a full, lush look. The leaves are a deep, glossy green that adds vibrancy and elegance to any space. This slow-growing plant typically reaches a height of 2 to 3 feet, making it ideal for tabletops, corners, or as part of your outdoor landscape in warmer climates. Its symmetrical shape and shiny foliage make it a statement piece that requires little effort on your part.

Why Choose the ZZ Plant?

  • Extremely Low Maintenance: This plant is the ultimate “set it and forget it” option. It can thrive on minimal water and tolerates low light, making it perfect for busy homeowners or office spaces with limited natural light.
  • Air Purifying: Like many indoor plants, the ZZ Plant helps purify the air by removing toxins like xylene, toluene, and benzene, promoting a healthier indoor environment.
  • Drought Tolerant: The ZZ Plant stores water in its thick, tuber-like roots, allowing it to withstand long periods without watering—great for frequent travelers or those who may forget to water their plants regularly.
  • Resilient: This plant is almost indestructible. It resists pests, thrives in low humidity, and can handle some neglect without missing a beat.

Ideal Placement and Uses

  • Indoors: The ZZ Plant is a top choice for indoor spaces. It works well in low-light areas like hallways, bathrooms, or offices, yet it can also thrive in bright, indirect light. Its compact, upright growth makes it a great fit for desktops, side tables, or as a centerpiece on your dining table.
  • Outdoors: While often grown indoors, the ZZ Plant can also be used outdoors in USDA Zones 9-11. Place it in pots on your patio, or plant it directly in your garden in shaded or semi-shaded areas for a touch of green that thrives without much care.

Easy Care Instructions

  • Light: The ZZ Plant is incredibly versatile. It tolerates low light but grows faster and fuller in medium to bright, indirect light.
  • Watering: This drought-tolerant plant prefers to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil is dry, but avoid letting it sit in water, as it dislikes soggy roots.
  • Soil: A well-draining potting mix, such as cactus or succulent soil, is ideal. This prevents excess moisture from causing root rot.
  • Temperature: It thrives in typical indoor temperatures ranging from 65°F to 75°F. Keep it away from cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F.
