Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Getting Started with Your Sago Palm

  1. Light: Give your Sago Palm bright, indirect light to full sun. Indoors, place it near your brightest window. Outdoors in warm climates, it thrives in full sun to partial shade. In low light, new fronds can stretch and become weak, so plenty of light keeps it compact.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Use a well-draining cactus or palm mix and a pot with drainage holes so water never sits around the trunk. Keep the top of the trunk above the soil line when potting, since burying it invites rot.
  3. Placement: Keep it above 50 degrees Fahrenheit indoors. Indoors it usually grows about 2 to 4 feet tall and spreads 3 to 5 feet wide, so give its stiff, arching fronds room away from walkways. On a patio, it can tolerate cold down to around 15 degrees Fahrenheit, but bring containers inside before hard freezes in cold climates.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water only after the soil has dried out, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain. It is drought tolerant once established, and too much water quickly leads to root rot. Water less often in winter.
  2. Humidity: Average indoor humidity is fine for a Sago Palm, and no misting is needed. Good air circulation around the fronds helps discourage scale insects.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a slow-release palm fertilizer during spring and summer to keep the fronds healthy and green. Skip feeding in fall and winter when growth slows. A palm formula that includes manganese helps prevent yellow new fronds.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the undersides of fronds and the trunk regularly for scale and mealybugs, which look like small bumps or white cottony spots. Scrape off light infestations and treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, repeating until the plant is clean.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: This slow grower needs repotting only every few years, when roots crowd the pot. Move up just one size in spring, using fresh cactus or palm mix and keeping the trunk at the same depth. Wear gloves when handling it.
  2. Pruning: Remove only fronds that are completely brown, cutting close to the trunk with clean pruners while wearing gloves, since the leaf tips are sharp. Old lower fronds naturally yellow with age, but avoid removing green or partly yellow fronds, which still feed the plant.
  3. New Growth: A Sago Palm usually produces a single flush of new fronds each year, emerging all at once in a circular burst. Avoid touching the soft new fronds until they harden, as they can bend easily, and keep watering steady but not excessive during the flush.

  1. Pet Safety: A Sago Palm is highly poisonous to dogs and cats. All parts are toxic, especially the seeds, and eating even a small amount can cause vomiting, liver failure and death. If you have pets, keep it completely out of reach or choose a pet-safe plant, and call a vet right away if a pet chews on it.
  2. Troubleshooting: Yellow fronds are most often caused by overwatering, poor drainage or a lack of nutrients such as manganese. Let the soil dry between waterings and feed with a slow-release palm fertilizer in the growing season.
