Planting Instructions for Giant Horsetail Reed (Equisetum hyemale)

1. Soil Preparation & Site Selection:
   Giant Horsetail Reed thrives in wet, poorly drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy, clay, and loamy soils. It grows best in slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5) and is often planted in boggy areas, near ponds, or along streams. For best results, choose a location with full sun to partial shade. This plant is ideal for low-lying, moist areas where other plants may struggle.
2. Digging & Planting:
   Dig a hole deep enough to comfortably fit the root mass, about 6–8 inches deep. Horsetail spreads through underground rhizomes, so be sure to give it space to spread. You can also use a root barrier or plant it in a container if you wish to control its spreading nature, as it can become invasive. If planting directly in the ground, place the root ball in the hole and backfill with native soil. If planting in a water garden or along a pond, it can grow in standing water up to 4 inches deep.

   Space the plants 2–3 feet apart if planting more than one. Horsetail Reed spreads aggressively through underground rhizomes, so if left unchecked, it can form dense stands over time. In container gardens, be sure to plant in a wide, deep pot to give the roots room to grow without overcrowding.
